Early October, a day of mists and mountain-hugging clouds with hardly a breeze to disperse them. The air is moist and cool.

Reaching the top of the mountain pass down to the fjord, we stopped for a moment to appreciate the verdant beauty of the landscape below.

Over the years of living in Southern California, I've grown increasingly fond of the summer colors in the typical coastal sage scrub and chaparral landscapes here.

In this photo from August, diffused light on a hazy morning illuminates a sage scrub hillside with both evergreen and dry, summer-dormant shrubs as well as yellow patches of flowering tarweed.

White Ice, Black Beach

March, and a storm is brewing. The wind is already howling in from the southern ocean, and Reynisfjara is being hammered by increasing surf.

The river flowing across the beach from Dyrhólaós carries chunks of ice into the sea, the wave action throws them back onto the black sand.

Above us and below the clotted clouds, seabirds ride the wild wind; otherwise, we are alone.

From Dyrhólæy, Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland.

A colour photo in an almost monochrome palette of a black beach. In the distance is a snow-covered mountain of dark rock and sea stacks are in the ocean at its end. The sea itself is wild and foamy, white surf is on every wave. The sky is heavy with stormy grey cloud, and there are many seabirds wheeling above the viewpoint. On the left and at the near end of the black beach is a large solitary rock. From its base and towards the viewer is a thick line of white ice pieces, cluttering the black sand. Please note that this image was taken before the black beach was reclaimed by the sea in February 2026. Eventually, Reynisfjara is expected to return to its familiar appearance.
