Eagle Fjord

Following the winding road along the side of the fjord, we're approaching beautiful Dynjandi, the white wedding veil waterfall and the jewel of the Westfjords.

It's mid-September and perfect weather for climbing the rugged path to the cascade, cool and with a slight breeze which is gently ruffling the waters of the fjord and distorting the reflections.

Arnarfjörður, the eponymous "eagle fjord" in Vestfirðir, north-western Iceland.

Autumn Colours

The beginning of October, and the first snow is yet to arrive in eastern Iceland.

The forecast is for a lovely day, so we set out early for somewhere we'd never visited before. An immense canyon, revealed by the diversion and reduction of a river, filled filled from bank to bed with "stuðlar" - basalt columns.

With its banks heavily wooded and clothed in the colours of autumn, this is Stuðlagil canyon.

Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach in the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the western side of Iceland for #MeerMittwoch this week. Fabulous rock formations around this part of the country, and behind us in this picture, the towering form of a glacier-topped volcano.

White Horsetail

Green with moss and lit beautifully from the south-west, the craggy mountain faces reveal their secret interior.

This tiered horsetail falls has 2 main drops and a combined height of 137 metres / 450 feet.

September: Stigafoss waterfall with Stigárjökull glacier in the top left. Öræfi ("wilderness, desolation") in south-eastern Iceland.

The plan to turn Toppstöðin into a recreational centre is still on despite yesterday's fire. The repairs will probably take a while since the building is not in good condition and it contains asbestos.

This summer I took photos of Toppstöðin. Sadly, the building caught fire today. Toppstöðin was a backup power station built in 1946. Recently, it was sold with plans to turn it into a recreation centre.

Morning Mountain

9am in late October, and the sun is rising in the east-south-east. Travelling south we pass Álftavatn, literally "Swan Lake".

The warm light catches the craggy flanks of Ingólfsfjall, a flat-sided volcanic tuya 551 metres / 1808 feet high.

The lake collects the reflection beautifully.

On Reflection

Halfway through an October afternoon, and we're on the southern side of the Öræfajökull glacier in south-west Iceland.

The rocks between the two glacier tongues are lit beautifully, and the scene is reflected in the roadside lake.

The glacier on the left is Stigárjökull and Hólárjökull is on the right.

Snout

An impressive wall of ice in shades of turquoise and grey. This was as close as our guide was prepared to bring our little Zodiac boat, and the towering face with icebergs all around showed good reason.

Calving is the main mode of loss for glaciers, and sometimes huge slabs break away from this ≈ 35 metres (115 feet) high face. The entire glacier is ≈ 1,400 m (4,593 ft) tall, towering above our little boat.
