Gli agrumi siciliani venivano esportati in tutto il mondo, i maggiori paesi importatori, dalla seconda metà dell’Ottocento, erano Inghilterra, Stati Uniti, Germania.

Il mercato siciliano era molto importante, la Sloman di Amburgo, una società di navigazione, ogni cinque giorni mandava una sua nave a Palermo per caricare da diecimila a ventimila casse da 300-600 frutti ognuna che servivano solo per Amburgo e Brema.

Ma settimanalmente partivano navi stracolme per Londra, Copenhagen, New York e altri porti inglesi e canadesi. Ogni cassa, ai quattro lati, aveva i “pizzi”, cioè carte veline illustrate coi bordi merlettati, e talvolta anche le “frinze”, cioè striscie di carta colorata. Aperta la cassa, appariva subito la “fodera”, un foglio di carta velina col marchio dell’esportatore che ricopriva interamente la prima fila di limoni, arance, mandarini, etc.

Tutte queste variopinte decorazioni servivano a impreziosire il prodotto, a farne una cosa quasi da regalo, a renderlo più attraente quando veniva battuto all’asta nei mercati.

Mata e Grifone, la leggenda che racconta la città di Messina

Tra le strade e le piazze di Messina, la storia si intreccia da secoli con il mito, dando vita a una delle tradizioni popolari più affascinanti della Sicilia: Mata e Grifone.

Le due gigantesche figure, protagoniste indiscusse della festa dell’Assunta, ogni agosto tornano a sfilare per le vie della città, accompagnate da musica, colori e dalla curiosità di grandi e piccoli.

Le origini di Mata e Grifone, affondano in un racconto leggendario che, nel corso dei secoli, si è intrecciato con la storia, la cultura e le trasformazioni della città.

Ancora oggi, durante le celebrazioni dell'agosto messinese, i due giganti percorrono le strade della città, ricordando una tradizione antica, capace di rinnovarsi senza perdere il legame con il passato.
