I think the western redcedars (Thuja plicata) are competing with banyans for trunk structures

The tree roots lift the sidewalk blocks, hence the blue warning stripe.

A large multitrunk redcedar grows under a sidewalk and against a garden retaining wall. On the left, you can see many branches springing up vertically from a horizontally sprawling trunk segment, and multiple small branching trunks from a base trunk on the right. It almost looks like a comb of small trunks. The bark is rough and grayish orange. The retaining wall behind it is covered with green algae, which form a film on parts of the trunk.

@carolannie@c.im Thuja plicata is an amazing tree that can really take weird shapes. Friend has a mature one in her yard and gave me a volunteer she had potted. It was about 10 inches when I planted it in my yard two years ago, now more than six feet.
