I am a quiet and calm wildlife photographer. I move slowly. I pause often. I feel, smell and listen to nature around me. Sometimes wildlife gets close because they trust me or they are just curious.

Recently a family of Black-tailed deer, 2 females and their fawns, walked towards me and then around me while foraging. They were so close that I could have touched them. I didn't. I remained still.

Here's one of the fawns.

Head and shoulders of a young deer looking to my left as it stopped next to me. There are green bushes in the background.

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Do you ever go out in hunting camo clothes or use a ghille suit?

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social My wife is completely jealous. Her favourite animal is the deer. We see them sometimes and she'll almost crash the car for a look. She likes most animals, though the speed and grace of deer catches her most

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social I had a similar encounter with a bobcat last year. It's magical when a wild animal trusts you enough to get that close to you.

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social That blissful feeling to have nature approaching YOU as a result of your respect and care while working Catherine 😍👏👏👏

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Beautiful moment. There’s something special about the trust that comes from simply being still and respecting an animal’s space. Patience and presence can create encounters that no amount of chasing ever could.

What an amazing experience. What a feeling that must have been for them to have been so close to you in such a trusting way.

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Congratulations, that is one awesome pic.

Compliments and other pertinent things aside, I like when baby animals have ears that are the size of their face.

i have the horror version story of this

i was a teenager out in the woods in the dark (don't ask, stupid teenager stuff)

there was something large in the woods near me

it kept getting closer

i braced myself, i made my breath silent

in a faint glimmer of a distant light with all my attention focused, i saw it: a deer next to me now

i sighed and made some noise and the deer bounded away in a racket, startled

i was fine, it was fine, stupid teenager hijinks abandoned

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Ever since backpacking in the Beartooths in 2019, my motto has been, "Anything is better if there are mountain goats."

We had pitched tents on the edge of their breakfast meadow, and I guess they see enough backpackers around that it was all cool unless we got a little too close.

Photo of a half dozen mountain goats grazing, include a kid and an adult looking at the photographer.
