The otter day during a private photo tour, we saw several rafts of sea otters. Some otters were caring for their pups, others were grooming or sleeping. They all looked very relaxed.

Sea otter floating on its back and rubbning its cheeks with its front paws as part of its grooming ritual. The sea is calm and blue, there is yellow kelp in the background and sea otters out of focus. A large patch of yellow kelp with dozens of sea otters in a calm blue sea with a forested coastline and mountains in the background. A sea otter pup lying on its mother's belly. The mum is floating on her back and rubbing her baby's face with her front paws. The sea looks dark green due to the reflection of a nearby forested coastline.

Last week, as the sun rose on the coast of Vancouver Island, we observed a black bear getting several salmon for breakfast. I have a good appetite in the morning too.

Photo taken during a private 5 day-photo tour.

A large black bear walking away from the photographers looks back at them. There is yellow grass behind it and large sandstones in the foreground.

I spent Sunday morning surrounded by dozens of small Pacific tree frogs and a few Red-legged frogs near a marsh. Just us, no one else around. The tree frogs were very small, about 2 cm (< 1 in.), and well hidden in the vegetation. I tapped the ground with my foot before each step to make sure that I was not stepping on them. A memorable experience.

A small green frog with a black line going from its eyes to its side sits on a green leaf surrounded by green vegetation.

Baby Vancouver Island marmot exploring its surroundings probably for the first time. They are born in the burrow and spend their first weeks underground. This little one came out of the burrow while mum was out collecting grass to refresh the bedding. (Photos from my archives)

Three dark brown marmots with a white spot on their forehead, chest and snout are gathered around a small rock in a field of pearly everlasting (a white wildflower). They are face to face with each other and in a circle.

White stonecrops on a rocky shoreline on Vancouver Island. This plant intrigues me every time I see it. Apparently it is an introduced species from Eurasia.

Close-up of dozens of white stonecrops, a weird-looking plant that is difficult for me to describe. I have found this description on a scientific website. General description: Perennial herb from a stout rhizome; mat-forming; stems decumbent to ascending, several, branched above, 10-20 cm tall/long, glabrous. Description of the leaves: Stem leaves alternate, smooth, evergreen, 6-12 mm long, nearly round in cross section, linear-oblong to ellipsoid, succulent, unstalked, usually broadest above the midlength and tapered to the base, usually somewhat flattened.

They have been nesting in this area for years. This year they successfully raised two chicks.

A shorebird with long legs, a white belly, brown patterns on its back, head and long tail. It has a long black bill and two black rings on its chest. It is seen from its side looking sideways at the photographer. It sits on a dark rocky conglomerate with a blurry green background.
