Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach in the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the western side of Iceland for #MeerMittwoch this week. Fabulous rock formations around this part of the country, and behind us in this picture, the towering form of a glacier-topped volcano.

It's a cool day with a mostly clear sky except towards the far horizon over the sea where a light bank of cloud forms a wall and high up where some streamers of puffy white cloud stretch across the view. We're on a beach of black sand looking out to sea. The surface is dimpled from wind and footsteps and it looks soft and awkward to walk upon. From the left, by the flat water's edge there is a rocky rise of land. The rocky areas are largely black and volcanic-looking and where they're not sheer or where the crags angle back enough there is short green grass growing. The faces of the rock are dotted with white, possibly some form of moss or lichen but it's difficult to tell as we're quite some way back from the sea. Separate from the main mass of rock there's another rocky formation just at the tide line. It averages about five metres in height and twenty five metres in length on the beach but a section stretches out behind it into the shallow water where it then rises to a thick finger
