Two views from Mad River Beach County Park. Separated by a thin strip of land, the Mad River parallels the Pacific Ocean near McKinleyville, California. You can walk this section of the coast and excellent viewpoints are found from Mad River Beach County Park to Clam Beach County Park. Beautiful day at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows a bit of the beach as well as the slopes one crosses to access the coastal area. In the distance, Trinidad can just be seen (center left). As for the photo, the upper half shows brilliant blue skies with a variety of white and grey cloud forms. Just below, Pacific Ocean waves roll in from the left and some green and yellow coastal vegetation anchors the right. Much of the lower half is sand, shaped by the wind and tides. In the immediate foreground, pieces of driftwood mix with the sand and plants. Clouds and waves at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows the incoming Pacific Ocean waves in the lower half while the upper half is fantastic white cloud forms in a blue sky that is dark blue on the top and lighter blue between the lower cloud formations. A pair of harbor seals watch from the waves (Though they are not necessarily visible in this photo! My harbor seal photos are always a bit of a guesstimate, given the overall composition and the use of a basic phone to document the scene. Thanks to those photographers who have good equipment and know how to use it, and who don’t mind sharing their beautiful crisp close-up photos of marine life!)

@nationalparks@sfba.social Ah, once again you reveal one of the most wonderful of places - the coast of California north of Eureka.

I don't know the reason why the Mad river has that name, but I do suspect that it, like the other rivers in the area, has had some memorable floods.
