Beautiful day at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows a bit of the beach as well as the slopes one crosses to access the coastal area. In the distance, Trinidad can just be seen (center left). As for the photo, the upper half shows brilliant blue skies with a variety of white and grey cloud forms. Just below, Pacific Ocean waves roll in from the left and some green and yellow coastal vegetation anchors the right. Much of the lower half is sand, shaped by the wind and tides. In the immediate foreground, pieces of driftwood mix with the sand and plants. Clouds and waves at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows the incoming Pacific Ocean waves in the lower half while the upper half is fantastic white cloud forms in a blue sky that is dark blue on the top and lighter blue between the lower cloud formations. A pair of harbor seals watch from the waves (Though they are not necessarily visible in this photo! My harbor seal photos are always a bit of a guesstimate, given the overall composition and the use of a basic phone to document the scene. Thanks to those photographers who have good equipment and know how to use it, and who don’t mind sharing their beautiful crisp close-up photos of marine life!)

Moving towards fall colors in Isle Royale National Park. National Park Service camera images from the last few days show a number of trees already sporting colors of red, yellow, and orange. This image (from this morning) shows a gentle blue sky with a few streaks of white clouds over a deeper blue sliver of Lake Superior (center, left to right). The coniferous and deciduous trees that make their home on the ridge below are generally green in this late-summer view, with a few patches of fall color here and there, including center left and especially lower right.

Really nice early evening view of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park from September 3. Labor Day weekend is just around the corner and the dock (lower left) is loaded with rental boats for park visitors. Gorgeous blue sky with an amazing array of clouds, which are reflected in the lake below. In the distance, mountains act as backdrop, some capped with clouds, others still colored by the light of the sun. Another beautiful evening view of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, this from yesterday. Labor Day weekend has passed and the dock (lower left) is no longer loaded with rental boats for park visitors. The sky is generally clear and colored in warm shades of blue. The evening also provides an interesting array of clouds, some of which hug the mountain tops in the background, with others stacked in fantastic shapes over the bright green forested slopes that rise from the lake on the right. Clouds, mountains, and trees are reflected on the lake’s surface and a single boat remains moored in the center of the image. The park is still quite busy, as a view of the entrance station or the parking lot at Logan Pass will reveal, but these two images might suggest that summer is winding down and fall is approaching.

Wonderful weather and lots of animal activity along the coast this weekend. Osprey overhead, harbor seals in the surf, even a glimpse of what appeared to be a whale or two near the Kuchel Visitor Center. This photograph, taken Monday afternoon, shows a few gentle waves approaching the beach under a mostly blue sky. Two birds in flight (upper left, maybe a pelican and some type of gull?) provide a splash of color. Temperatures were warm each day of the weekend with generally mild winds. The current forecast suggests that warmer than normal temperatures could occur along the coast over the next couple of days. Bring extra water and enjoy your visit!

The colors of the crater from the Summit District in Haleakala National Park include orange, green, red, brown, black, and more, as this National Park Service image from yesterday afternoon reveals. A layer of white clouds hugs the crater and extends into the distance. Shades of blue make up the sky, deep above, lighter below, then deep again as sky mixes with clouds. A small section of a summit structure appears in the lower left and a tiny sliver of the park road appears in the lower right. The park name, along with the time and date, are included in the lower left corner.

View across Bartlett Cove towards the Fairweather Range yesterday (Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve). The Glacier Bay cameras are operating at this time and the images are quite beautiful. The waters of the cove are green and blue with a few ripples marking the surface. A group of green and yellow deciduous trees acts as a frame on the left. On the right is a small section of the dock. Behind the dock, a deep green forest of conifers lines the shore. In the distance, the mountains of the Fairweather Range can be seen, topped with a layered mix of white clouds and blue sky. If you take a look at the view today, you may notice that the tide is lower and the moon is setting right in the center of the sky. Thanks to the National Park Service for providing these images!

A beautiful day in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. This photograph is from the visitor center on Friday. Clear blue skies with an array of interesting cloud formations over a landscape that, from this location, includes a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and other plants in all shades of green and yellow. Whiskeytown Lake is visible in the center of the photo (bottom third) and, on this day, the lake was resplendent in colors of blue, green, and gold. Signs of previous wildfires were visible throughout the area. Of note were the gorgeous needles on the trees near the shore of the lake - certainly a good enticement for a walk if you are in the area.

A very pleasant day in the park, this photograph shows a sparkling Pacific Ocean as it meets the coastal contours of Santa Cruz Island. In the lower part of the photo, kelp hugs the shoreline, with intriguing near-shore rocks just above. The ocean (right) is a collection of deep blue colors, while the island geology and vegetation (left) in this view are tan, orange, and a variety of greens. Sunset colors are quite spectacular in Isle Royale National Park as this National Park Service camera image from Sunday evening shows. A helpful collection of clouds with shades of orange, yellow, pink, and blue-grey decorate the sky. The surface of Lake Superior echoes some of these colors, with oranges and pinks on the left and silvers and blue-greys on the right. Canadian landforms can be seen on the horizon in the upper part of the image just above the lake. The lower half of the image is an expanse of trees in colors of green, grey, white, and black. Thanks to the National Park Service for providing these beautiful views.

The forest this week has been very pleasant. Moderate temperatures, some fog, some clouds, some sun, all of which make for good walking in the trees. This photograph (from Tuesday) shows a variety of conifer trees on a slope in Redwood National and State Parks. Green needles are seen here and there, as are sky colors, muted but blue at the time. Of note are the forest birds, including the brown creeper, which fill the forest with songs and calls. Should you find yourself in the forest, take a moment to stop and just listen. With luck, you may see the creeper working its way up a tree trunk, pitching bits of bark and such into the air as they search for food. As for this photo, a half dozen beautiful trees fill the scene, with bark colored reddish brown, tan, grey, and gold. The appearance of the bark varies from tree to tree, some with a spiral form, some with deep crevices. This National Park Service web camera image shows a normal summer day in Mount Rainier National Park: Well-developed white clouds in a pretty blue sky over green meadows, trees, and mountain slopes, a flag on a flagpole, numerous vehicles in a parking lot, and a uniformed ranger setting up an interpretive display near the buildings of the Sunrise Visitor Center (center foreground). This National Park Service web camera image provides a look at the Sunrise Visitor Center area in Mount Rainier National Park as crews prepare the area in response to a nearby wildfire. The fire is approximately three miles north of the visitor center. Fuels reduction efforts are underway. Trees and plants have been removed from areas around the buildings. The parking lot is now a staging area for crews responding to the fire. The flagpole appears in the center foreground but this time without flag and surrounding vegetation. Some haze appears in the scene. The Sunrise Lodge, built in 1931 (and a key component of the Sunrise Historic District), can be seen on the left (middle ground just off the parking area). Bald Hills and the Redwood Creek watershed were generally obscured by smoke yesterday as this image from the trail to Lyons Ranch shows. The smoke was widespread, visible along Bald Hills road above Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Temperatures in the higher elevation areas have been in the high 80s and low 90s. This photograph shows blue sky (top) above smoke-shrouded hills (center) and dry, golden colored vegetation in the foreground. The hills in the middle ground are covered with deep green colored trees, except in the areas where active logging is occurring on lands adjacent to the park (a patchwork of clear-cuts runs from left to right in the middle third of the photo).

Red huckleberry in the forest understory of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday. The berries are just beginning to appear in this part of the park. This photograph shows two red berries (center right foreground and center left background) with sections of green stem and leaves making up the remainder of the picture. Subdued lighting leads to an overall cool minty green color despite the high noon timing of the photo taking. Evergreen huckleberry in the forest understory of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday. The berries are just beginning to appear in this part of the park. This photograph shows a deep blue berry (center) and a lighter green berry (left) lit by the sun, with sections of reddish -brown stem and green leaves making up the remainder of the picture. The background is generally not in focus, but shows a few additional branches and dappled sunlight on the forest floor. A location with ready access to sun and water resulted in this individual plant having a good amount of berries relative to neighboring shrubs.
