@daniel@gultsch.social google still profits even if you don't put a monetary price on the program you know?
If you want to show google, the way to do so is to not list it on the played store and also work out how to compile the f-droid version without google's proprietary computer.
@daniel@gultsch.social You have just helped in so many ways. I was very afraid of not being able to install a Jabber client easily on newcomers devices because of the upcoming policy. This will help very much in my campaign for Jabber in my local community. You are the best!
@daniel@gultsch.social I've previously bought it on google play as that's been the easiest way to give support but switched over to the f-droid version after reading this.
Might eventually migrate my grandma to the playstore version for ease of updates though.. She's on the f-droid version today because she doesn't want to give google her payment info..
Different needs for different people I guess.. wishing all the best 🙂
@daniel@gultsch.social I've been an xmpp user since the jabberd1.4 days. So many things have happened since then in xmpp-world.
Thank you for being such a large part in making it practically viable to make xmpp usable in everyday life today.
And congratulations that you could make it into a commercial success as well.
@daniel@gultsch.social
Wow, that's great for the #xmpp community.
Fortunately, I’m no longer economically dependent on Google Play Store revenue.
Good to hear that you have sustainable ways to generate income without google.
An huge thank you for your work @daniel@gultsch.social and I am sorry and happy to read this. Hope you'll still be able to get money from your amazing work in a near and distant future. Hope this will help more people to switch to XMPP.
@daniel@gultsch.social
Lets all be honest. Conversations is the reason XMPP stays relevant. Since around 2019 I am hosting the communication of my family with prosody and everyone uses conversations. It's an app made for normal people, not for geeks. And that's essential to reach everybody.
@daniel@gultsch.social I still don't understand the difference between the free and paid Conversations app. Is it just to support you?
@daniel@gultsch.social Here's hoping you get enough from donations to make continued development worth your time. It's an awesome project.

"This effectively means I’m paying Google more than 1000 Euro per year for their service. [...] Apparently that amount of money doesn’t give me the privilege to talk to a fucking human for five minutes once per year."
Exactly. There's a "size" at which companies are inevitably crap. I'm so sick of support chatbots / ignored emails / looking for a bug report site that doesn't exist, when "open source" software shits the bed. Even when volunteering your help, it's closed doors.
@daniel@gultsch.social Wish you success with the changes to the business model. Love the app. I am in the same sort of toxic relationship with Google Ads.
@daniel@gultsch.social I'm sad because revenue loss is not a good thing, but this will help in a lot of case when people use shitty phones that kills apps and don't want to pay to test a messaging sys...
I'm also very happy grant system recognize the usefulness of your work!
Hi @daniel@gultsch.social, foremost: Thank you for your work! Congratulations to your career as well. I think it's very well an exemplary Open Source developer career. I'm glad it turned out for you so well. Last: Thanks for that present. Don't know if you are aware, but this step will allow many teenagers who do not have any Google Play credits to use your software easily. For me that's a huge breakthrough in #a11y. (I know there's F-Droid, but that's not as simple.) So, thanks a lot!
#xmpp
@daniel@gultsch.social this is the way we users feel towards big-tech in general: "For years** I’ve felt like I was in a toxic relationship** with Google, *and the only reason I stayed was economic dependency." *
What else if not that is the main reason to use their products (or sell via their channels)? Thanks for sharing!
@daniel@gultsch.social I've not really considered XMPP in the past, but just downloaded your client (fdroid) and have decided to give it a chance since I came across your post.
Thank you for your years of dedication!
@daniel@gultsch.social Thank you for your work and glad you have secured funding. It's a rock-solid program, I always recommended it to most people I know.
@daniel@gultsch.social Wow thanks. I've been installing #Conversations in my family phones for a while this is gonna make my "mission" easier, with my friends now 💯
Thank you for all! ❤️
Me and my family are using Conversations since years, for free.
And for the story behind your latest decision.
