London saw around 90% of the Sun covered by the Moon on 12 August 2026. I wanted to shoot the , but make it clearly , not just a picture of the with no context.

So it was time to load up to work out where I needed to be to get the sun right next to , a quintessential London landmark.

It took me a while to figure out how to best edit this photo as it was pretty difficult to since pushing of the shadows was liable to leave some bandi

It took me a while to figure out how to best edit this photo as it was pretty difficult to since pushing of the shadows was liable to leave some banding artifacts due to the fact that I needed to severely underexpose most of the frame in order to capture the crisp disc of the sun.

But I'm actually quite happy with this. It's rather symbolic of just how weird the lighting felt at the point of maximum eclipse.

A photograph of the solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 at the point of maximum partial eclipse. The eclipsed sun can be seen towards the bottom right of the frame whilst the silhouette of the top of Big Ben (from the clock upwards) dominates the centre of the frame.
