Watching the eclipse-watchers

This lady sat quietly watching proceedings during the solar eclipse last week, completely unaffected by all the excitement happening around her. When it was over, she folded up sunglasses, got up from her bench and went home. I thought she was great!

Schatten einer Hand an einer rauen Wand. Die Form erinnert an einen Tierkopf mit Geweih. An der Stelle, wo das Auge ist, fällt das Sonnenlicht durch ein mit der Hand gebildetet kleines Loch, wodurch nach dem Prinzip der Lichkamera die Sichel der durch den Mond teilweise verdeckten Sonne gespiegelt sichtbar wird. The shadow of a hand on a rough wall. The shape is reminiscent of an animal’s head with antlers. Where the eye would be, sunlight falls through a small hole formed by the hand, causing the crescent of the sun – partially obscured by the moon – to be reflected and visible, in accordance with the principle of a pinhole camera.

Eine Brücke mit Geländer verläuft quer durch das Bild und hebt sich als Silhouette gegen einen klaren Himmel ab. Die Sonne steht tief und erzeugt einen intensiven Lichtschein, der die Konturen der Brücke und die Umrisse von Menschen darauf betont, die zur Himmelsbeobachtung auf der Brücke stehen. Im Vordergrund sind Straßenbahnschienen und ein hell beleuchtetes Fahrzeug zu sehen. Bäume und Gebäude bilden den Hintergrund.

(My neighbours showed up near the peak, and they HAD eclipse glasses!

They were kind enough to share..

Dark village and trees, under an over-exposed orange white sun low in the sky. The lens flare has a tiny crescent artifact - the reversed, partially eclipsed sun!

It took me a while to figure out how to best edit this photo as it was pretty difficult to since pushing of the shadows was liable to leave some banding artifacts due to the fact that I needed to severely underexpose most of the frame in order to capture the crisp disc of the sun.

But I'm actually quite happy with this. It's rather symbolic of just how weird the lighting felt at the point of maximum eclipse.

A photograph of the solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 at the point of maximum partial eclipse. The eclipsed sun can be seen towards the bottom right of the frame whilst the silhouette of the top of Big Ben (from the clock upwards) dominates the centre of the frame.

It may only have been 90% partial, but we had a good time watching the eclipse with many locals atop the 40 metre Teltschikturm at 530 metres up in the Odenwald. Stunning location.

The Sun was still partly eclipsed as it set over Mannheim & the Pfalz on the other side of the Rhine Valley.

Did a live radio with LBC from up there & a long piece with BBC News TV when I got home.

Next year totality with the family in Spain (again), I hope.

The Sun just about to touch the western horizon at sunset, partially eclipsed by the Moon on the left-hand side, taking a bite out of it. The sky is yellow and orange, and there are many windmills in the distance along the hills of the Pfalz on the other side of the Rhine plain. In the middle distance, the plain can be seen with part of Mannheim, while in the foreground, the foothills of the Odenwald are in darker shades. There are some wisps of clouds in the sky above the Sun.

Today's shortly after its peak, as the sun sets behind a mountain. Unfortunately, it wasn't a total solar eclipse in (around 90% at its peak), but it was still quite spectacular. I took a few more landscape photos, which I hope to find time to develop in the coming days.

The sun sets as a red-orange crescent behind a mountain. Trees are visible as black shadows at the bottom of the sun on the ridge. The crescent is caused by a partial solar eclipse.
