But who is Joe Pye? It seems to be the anglophone name of a very interesting Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat, living at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Massachusetts and New York. Not clear he had anything to do with the plant, maybe only by association.

This cliff site is Lightning Dreaming, one of the creation stories of the Gun-djeihmi-speaking people. It's part of the story of one of the creation ancestors, Namarrkon, who is responsible for the violent lightning storms that occur every tropical summer. "He uses the axes on his head, elbows and feet to split the dark clouds and make lightning and thunder. Namarrkon’s story in this area is part of a larger story. It covers his journey from the coastline of the Coburg Peninsula to a rock shelter in the sandstone country of the Arnhem Land plateau, where he remains today. During his travels, Namarrkon left his power behind at many places. On Namarrkon’s last journey, he approached the Arnhem Land escarpment from the east and looked over the sheer wall. He took out an eye and placed it high on the cliff at Namarrkondjahdjam (Lightning Dreaming), where it sits waiting for the storm season.
