DEFENSIVE HOME OF THE MIDDLETONS
Posting this shot from yesterday's visit to Belsay Hall in Northumberland and after exploring the delights of the quarry Garden, it was the ruins of Belsay Castle next, looking stunning in the late summer sunshine.
The 14th-century medieval castle is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade I listed building.
It began life during troubled times in the English/Scottish borders, around 1370 as a rectangular 'pele tower' with turrets and battlements and home to the Middleton family.
In later years Thomas Middleton added on a manor house in 1614.
Further alterations were added and demolished with the castle finally abandoned as a family residence early in the 19th century when owner Sir Charles Monck built a new residence, Belsay Hall, close by.

Heading towards the final fortnight of summer and catching the warm sunlight spilling into the Quarry Garden at Belsay Hall in Northumberland this afternoon.
The Quarry Garden, as its name might suggest, is a garden that was created across the site of an old quarry and the source of the sandstone used to build Belsay Hall and many buildings in the nearby village.
The Quarry Garden is well-known as having its own microclimate, allowing many exotic plants to flourish alongside stunning rhododendrons.
Belsay Hall lies a few miles north of Ponteland and is in the care of English Heritage.

These 'loft-style' apartments provide a great backdrop to the boats in the harbour at Amble in North East England.
From what I gather, these properties, directly overlooking Amble Marina and the River Coquet Estuary consist primarily of what is described as 'upscale waterfront apartments, modern residential complexes, and luxury chalet-style coastal retreats.'
If you're a fan of the TV detective series 'Vera' then the location may strike a note of familiarity as I think this spot has featured as a location on more than one occasion.

Into the final week of summer... or so the Met Office would have us believe.
A week today and the decree will be going out that it's the final day of the season that this year has been record-breaking, in terms of the amount of sunshine, warmth and the lack of rainfall.
However, for the avoidance of doubt, the season of summer doesn't officially end until the equinox, which this year falls on 23 September.
We can't stop the evenings drawing in, but we can bask in the season of summer for another four weeks or so.
Some good news for those wanting to see a splashdown, there is rain and somewhat cooler temperatures forecast, BUT, did I hear a mention of it warming up once again as we head into September?

This glorious sunset was shot at Yeavering, near the Anglo Saxon palace of Ad Gethrin. They were moved around the north of Northumbria from their religious centre at Lindisfarne to their summer palace, Ad Gethrin. They had little of the bejewelled wealth of those farther south, here they valued knowledge, land cattle and power. And they built the most influential of kingdoms.
