Beneath a deep blue desert sky with streaky white clouds we are standing atop cracked pinkish violet rocks looking down several hundred feet into a landscape of narrow shallow canyons and rock formations below. There are striations of color throughout: chalky white, blue gray, pinkish violet. A scattering of olive green shrubs are the only signs of life in an otherwise barren landscape. Beyond the colorful hills is a sprawling flat grassland. Many miles away on the horizon, a lofty mountain range with several snowcapped peaks rises above that plain.
