is what appears to be a homemade historical marker at the Gold Hill Hotel on the south side of Virginia City in Nevada. We stayed there while 4x4 trip back a bit after Y2K. For an old funky desert hotel they had a great restaurant.

A sig on an old building wall reads "GOLD HILL HOTEL FIRST HOTEL ON THE COMSTOCK. BUILT 1859. EARLY TRANSIENT SHELTER WAS TAKEN IN DUGOUTS AND TENTS. SOME OF THESE WERE CALLED HOTELS. BOARDING AND ROOMING HOUSES SPRANG UP WITH POPULATION. THIS IS THE FIRST EDIFICE KNOWN TO NEVADA, TO BE WORTHY THE NAME OF HOTEL. Gold Hill Landmarks"

Descending a dry gulch between rock formations, Little Painted Desert County Park near Winslow, Arizona. April 1984.

Beneath a deep blue desert sky with streaky white clouds we are walking down a dry ravine between two very light beige rock formations. We are descending into a landscape of narrow shallow canyons and rock formations. There are striations of color throughout: chalky white, blue gray, reddish brown. A scattering of olive green shrubs along the floor of the ravine are the only signs of life in an otherwise barren landscape.

Late Afternoon Hike Through the Sand Dunes, Death Valley National Monument (now National Park), California. March, 1984.

Beneath a whitewashed late afternoon sky, we are standing on an old dried up lake bed of cracked pinkish beige packed sand. To our left is an olive colored shrub. Ahead are two large dunes of that same pinkish beige sand piled high above our heads. There are ripples and creases along parts of the dunes, carved by the winds that formed them.

Beneath a deep blue desert sky with streaky white clouds we are standing atop cracked pinkish violet rocks looking down several hundred feet into a landscape of narrow shallow canyons and rock formations below. There are striations of color throughout: chalky white, blue gray, pinkish violet. A scattering of olive green shrubs are the only signs of life in an otherwise barren landscape. Beyond the colorful hills is a sprawling flat grassland. Many miles away on the horizon, a lofty mountain range with several snowcapped peaks rises above that plain.

A bloom of Desert Sand Verbena along the broad drainage of Carrizo Wash in southern Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.

Was watching the radar and feeling bummed that Tucson was getting the storms, then the little puffy cloud that could lit up red (rain core) on the radar, so I grabbed me gear and went 5 minutes to my favorite spot and got two nice shots.

Night time in the desert. A long "crawler" type lightning bolt runs horizontally across the otherwise dark, cloudy sky in the background, spreading out into half a dozen electric fingers. In the foreground, two large saguaro cactus are mostly silhouetted. Late afternoon desert lightning strike. The main bolt lands on a far, hazy ridgeline. A secondary bolt reaches out horizontally across the top of the frame. The foreground is open desert with lots of saguaro cactus in the distance. The clouds are a warm sunset orange, brighter where lit up by the lightning flashes.

Eine weitläufige Wüstenlandschaft im warmen, dunstigen Licht eines diesigen Tages. Im Vordergrund rasten und stehen mehrere Dromedare auf dem hellen Wüstensand: Einige der Tiere liegen im Sand, andere stehen gesattelt mit bunten Decken bereit. Im mittleren Bildhintergrund sind weitere Dromedargruppen sowie vereinzelt Personen zu erkennen. Der Horizont verliert sich in einem kornblumen- bis goldgelb getönten, extrem dunstigen Himmel, der den gesamten oberen Bildbereich einnimmt.

"High Above Nowhere"

For I have this photo from one of my desert hikes in January this year, looking back south from the approach to Pyramid Peak in the Santa Rosa Mountains, which mark the boundary between San Diego County and Riverside County to the north. The San Diego side is part of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Didn't see a single person all day (which is the best part about many desert hikes😉).
