A dramatic subterranean cavern where a massive, fluted stalactite hangs suspended from an arched limestone ceiling. Uplighting reveals the mineral formation's creamy, ribbed texture and cascading folds, resembling heavy drapery tapering into delicate, serrated points. The surrounding rugged rock faces and deep cavernous shadows frame the pendant, with stark crevices and stratified stone illuminated against the deep subterranean dark.

Snow settling on a thatched roof in Shirakawa, with some stalactites forming.

Shirakawa, Gifu, Japan

A phototograph of snow falling on a thatched roof. The angle is from the ground upwards. The photo is framed in such a way that the image is sliced diagonally from the bottom left to the top right, with the upper-left half of the image predominantly white with snow, and the lower-right half of the image predominantly brown with the ends of the twigs from the thatched roof. There is light in- and out-of-focus snow drifting through the frame. Where the snow meets the edge of the thatched roof, small stalactite icicles are forming. The sky is homogeneous grey cloud.
