Beneath a partly cloudy sky the sun is setting behind the leafless trees of a winter hardwood forest. A couple inches of fresh wet snow covers the ground and most of the tree branches, sticking to parts of the trunks. A thick underbrush of leafless shrubs is also coated with snow. A small stream with snow-coated rocks runs through the middle of the forest, emptying into a large snow-covered mostly frozen lake beyond the trees. The snow is tinted gold where touched by the rays of the setting sun.

From a walk only ten minutes away from the city center. That's one of the things I really love about my hometown Kristiansand, you're never far from nature. And even the cloudy days are just wonderful. In this photo, although it might be difficult to see, the little lake is actually covered with a layer of ice.

View towards the end of a little lake just ten minutes outside the city center of my hometown Kristiansand. A layer of ice is still covering the whole lake.

We are standing a few feet uphill from the shore of a large lake that has frozen over and been dusted with snow. A mixed forest of leafless hardwoods, hemlocks and pines surrounds the lake. A wooden footbridge crosses the mouth of a small cove in front of us, leading to a grove of tall old pines and hemlocks across the cove. The cloudy sky is being tinted vivid pink and violet by the imminent sunrise. A few unfrozen patches of the lake below mirror these colors.

Standing near the shore of a frozen lake. The ground around us is coated with an inch or two of snow that has melted and refroze, capturing small animal tracks and other details in the ice. The sun is setting over the wooded far shoreline, casting deep shadows across our miniature tundra. Leafless trees in the forest surrounding the lake are silhouetted in the light. The sky is filled with streaks of hazy thin clouds, tinted gold and orange along the horizon. The sun is an enlarged blob of bright yellow behind the veil of haze, creating an elongated bright reflection on the ice.

This is a simple black and white wildlife photo of two Humpback Whales swimming side-by-side with just the top of their backs and small dorsal fins visible above the water and a small iceberg in the background. Southern Ocean (2024). Dominating most of the photo is a smooth expanse of sea water with just the smallest ripples disturbing the surface. Below and to the left of centre are our two Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) viewed from slightly above and at a distance of five metres. The whales are swimming along the surface, their wakes causing only the smallest disturbance in the water behind them. All that is visible is the long ridge of their black backs, perhaps five or more metres in length and the small dorsal fin to the rear of the back. The whales are swimming slowly side-by-side, only a few metres apart with the closest being very slightly ahead of the farther whale. In the upper left corner is a small, bright white, iceberg about ten metres long and a few metres vis

This is a colour wildlife photo in landscape format of a Gentoo Penguin, racing away with a small rock in its beak, having just stolen it from another penguin's nest (they use small rocks, stones or pebbles as a nesting material). Booth Island, Antarctica (2024). In the foreground is a large, smooth and sloping rock, stained a medium red or brown, that rises up from the lower left corner, extends over to the right margin and rises upwards to a little less than the quarter up level. In the centre of the photo is our thieving Gentoo Penguin hurrying from left to right. The penguin is viewed obliquely with right side and back in view, filling most the height of the photo and view from a few metres away and at the same level as the bird. In fact the photo was taken from five or more metres away, but with a long lens so the photo appears to be shot much closer. In the bird's beak is a small dark and sharp rock, probably no more than a few cm across. The sides of the bird's beak are bright

Banks of gray clouds are retreating eastward, leaving a swath of clear sky along the western horizon. The recently set sun is tinting that clear sky pale gold, while tinting the bottoms of many of the clouds a bright pink. We are standing beside a big lake, on a wooded rocky shoreline. A think skim of ice with dozens of melted patches covers much of the lake, a wide swath near our shore is completely thawed, mirroring the colorful sky. A forest of leafless hardwoods with a few evergreens encircles the lake.
