I was going to make this monochrome, but the subtle pinks, green stems and cobalt blue glass were doing too much compositional work to throw away. Colour as composition.

Nikon D800, Nikkor-S Auto 50mm f/1.4.

Two pale cream dahlias emerge from a deep black background, one large bloom lower left and a smaller flower above and to the right. Their petals carry very subtle pink tones toward the centres. Dark green stems descend into a ribbed cobalt-blue glass vase, which is only partly revealed by the light. The lighting is soft and directional, giving the petals gentle modelling while leaving most of the surrounding space in darkness.
