Kola's Canyon

Kolufossar is the collective name for waterfalls cascading through Kolugljúfur, a 50 metre deep canyon carved by the Víðidalsá river. In February, when we visited, only a small amount of water was still flowing through a thick crust of ice and snow.

Local legend says that the gorge was created by a female troll named Kola, who caught salmon by hand and cooked them in nearby Koluketill hot spring.

Húnaþing vestra, north-western Iceland.

A colour photo of a frozen waterfall in a landscape covered in ice and snow. At the top of the shot in the centre is a river, usually running towards the viewpoint but currently frozen almost stationary. The river banks are quite flat but lead to mountains on either side in the distance. The river drops over a straight crest which is set diagonally in the streambed. From there it drops over rocks which narrow into a gulley, which is completely covered in ice. The rocks on either side of the viewpoint are topped with wind-sculpted snow drifts. A second colour photo of the canyon looking in the opposite direction. The gorge has dramatically steep walls, quite vertical in places. The small amount of sky that's visible is grey and overcast with snow cloud. On the right is a viewing platform with a barrier and seating which provides some scale. Every ledge that's even close to horizontal is covered with deep snow drifts, but the dark rock of the canyon walls is relatively clear of ice. At the bottom of the gorge, most of the river is frozen over except for small areas where the water surface can be glimpsed.
