Beams

This photo has been horribly overworked, I admit it, but there is method in my madness.

This was taken looking almost directly upwards from below a KP7 auroral display. It was quite cloudy but the aurora was so bright that it cast a shadow at my feet.

When I first processed the image, I didn't think there was much of interest in it. More editing revealed these fabulous green beams, seeming to disappear into infinity.

A colour photo of a dark night sky with lots of stars visible. Cloud is stretching across the image from the lower right to centre right, and smaller clumps of isolated cloud are scattered about. Above the cloud is an astonishing auroral display, with strong green stripes and bars pointing upwards and fading as they rise, in reality parallel to each other but seeming to converge at a point in the top centre of the shot.

Forked Tongue

Aurora lights the sky above Fardagafoss in eastern Iceland.

An unusually clear night in October means that it's well below freezing but we aren't troubled by clouds. Even though we weren't in a dark sky area (it was a Bortle¹ 4) we could still see lots of stars.

This lovely display lasted for almost two hours.

A colour photo of green aurora across a dark sky filled with stars. The loops of vivid green begin at the centre left of the photo and continue across in three main arcs, a strong bright one fading near the centre of the shot, another containing standing bars is dipping down to the horizon and one loop of light at the right of centre has two beams rising from it, reminiscent of the forked tongue of a snake. In the lower right quarter is more diffuse green aurora. The horizon is a silhouette of a hillside, some trees and a power pylon are highlighted by aurora behind them.
