Beams

This photo has been horribly overworked, I admit it, but there is method in my madness.

This was taken looking almost directly upwards from below a KP7 auroral display. It was quite cloudy but the aurora was so bright that it cast a shadow at my feet.

When I first processed the image, I didn't think there was much of interest in it. More editing revealed these fabulous green beams, seeming to disappear into infinity.

This is from January 19, when the northern lights were visible in my city in the Netherlands.

It still amazes me. 🥰

Tonight is the night, Montana! The partial lunar eclipse begins ~8:30, peaks ~10:10 & ends ~11:50. PLUS: the northern lights should be visible (fewer clouds west than east). PLEASE send me your photos! I'll have your complete 7-day weather forecast tonight!

Forked Tongue

Aurora lights the sky above Fardagafoss in eastern Iceland.

An unusually clear night in October means that it's well below freezing but we aren't troubled by clouds. Even though we weren't in a dark sky area (it was a Bortle¹ 4) we could still see lots of stars.

This lovely display lasted for almost two hours.
