Brown Pelican Glide

This brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) had just completed a plunge dive when I snapped this image. Here, the bird is beginning its ascent, wings lifting as it shakes off the ocean’s surface. I followed it with my camera as it climbed higher and higher, gaining altitude with that steady, powerful rhythm pelicans have. A moment later it rose to a good height, banked slightly, and plunged again into the Gulf of Mexico.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A brown pelican sweeps across the frame from right to left, its wings stretched wide and steady as it glides just above the rippling ocean surface. The bird’s long body is angled slightly downward, giving the impression of effortless, low‑flying precision. Its feathers — a mix of soft browns, charcoal grays, and pale highlights — catch the light in layered patterns that show every contour of its wings.

The pelican’s beak, long and unmistakably heavy, points forward like a compass needle guiding its flight. Beneath it, the water shifts in gentle waves, each ripple reflecting muted blues and silvers. Rising from the sea is a tall timber pile, weathered and dark, standing like a lone sentinel. The pelican passes it with calm authority, wings barely moving, as if the ocean air itself is carrying it along.

The whole scene feels quiet and purposeful — a single bird navigating its world with grace, strength, and an easy confidence earned from a lifetime spent skimming the water’s surface."
