This is a black and white wildlife photo of the silhouette of a large bird in flight with multiple sunbeams radiating from the sun thats just behind the bird. Angel Island, California (2016). Above and to the left of centre is a Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) sometimes called a Buzzard or Turkey Buzzard. The camera is angled upwards into the sky with the bird being viewed from three metres away and filling half the height of the photo. The vulture's in flight from right to left with it's large wings outspread as it soars above a coastal hillside that is out of view below the base of the photo. The bird is deep in shadow with only the silhouette visible. The small head and individual feathers on the wing tips are conspicuous. Immediately behind the wings is the sun obscuring the tail feathers. Rather than a round orb, the sun appears as eight spokes of brilliant white light radiating from the centre with some of the spokes beginning to split into a narrow two pronged fork towards the

This is a black and white wildlife photo in landscape format of three large white-tailed eagles soaring of a cliff face. Gjesværstappan Islands, Norway (2017). Other than part of the near vertical cliff face the image is filled with a clear and cloudless sky rendered a light grey. The cliff face starts a short distance below the top right corner and descends at a steep angle into the lower right corner of the photo. The cliff is made up of smooth rocks with tufts of long grass growing from cracks in the rock. A short distance from the cliff are the three White-Tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), often called Sea Eagles. The first eagle is above centre and is viewed from below at a distance of ten metres. Dear Mastodon,

I just recently moved, and our new place has very large plate glass windows that look out onto a wooded area. Very nice view, but obviously a death trap for birds... We've unfortunately already had two fatal collisions since we moved in.

I can't change the windows in the short term, so I'm searching for a quick solution. I could do an array of stick on reflectors, but I wanted to check with you on this "bird pen" (see photo).

The idea is that you draw lines with a marker that absorbs in the UV but not in the visible, so the birds see it but people don't. That's a cool idea... but does it really work?

UPDATE: For everyone sharing this or seeing it now, there is a clear answer in a post below: this is not an effective solution.

Also based on some replies already received: if you want to do something to help birds, make sure you do it on the OUTSIDE of the window, because a big problem is the reflection of the sky and trees (the birds don't necessarily see what is inside of the window).

Buzzards

This is a black and white wildlife photo in landscape format of a large bird soaring beside a hillside and searching for food. Angel Island, California (2017). In the foreground and blurred gently out of focus are numerous shrubs, assorted vegetation and a medium sized tree with dark leaves dominating the left third of the photo. To the right and slightly above centre in the image is our Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura) sometimes called a Turkey Buzzard or just Buzzard. The bird is soaring in the sea breeze that's blowing up the hillside allowing the bird to almost hover over an area of interest (breakfast). The bird is viewed in profile with only the left side and top surface in view. The camera is at the same level as the bird and is viewed from a few metres away (in reality much further away but the camera has a long lens in use).
