Wingbeat of Spring

This is a lively, almost mischievous image of a female Northern Cardinal caught mid‑flight, as if she’s taking a bold leap of faith straight through the air. Her wings are stretched wide, each feather fanned out in soft browns brushed with warm red. Her tail flares behind her like a little banner, and her bright orange beak points forward with determined enthusiasm.

She’s suspended between thin branches and fresh green leaves, the background melting into a gentle blur that makes her motion feel even more daring. On my lunchtime walk, I found a Pale-headed Rosella, and two Tawny Frogmouths (one seems to be nesting).

A parrot with pale yellow head, richer yellow neck and back (with black spots), pale blue chest and belly and rich blue wings and tail and (just visible) a red rump. It is perched on a branch, facing right. A grey mottled bird, owl like but not an owl, perched in a casuarina tree. It is staring directly at the camera. It has a wide beak, and large yellow eyes. Another Tawny Frogmouth, this time perched on a fairly small nest of twigs in a dead tree. The bird appears to be asleep, which would be normal as they are nocturnal.
