Rows of red paper lanterns hang across a street in Chinatown, London, in front of brick terraced buildings with white-framed windows. In the foreground, a woman in a beige jacket and grey skirt walks across the street, caught in a patch of sunlight between two bands of shadow on the road. Behind her, shopfronts line the street, with more people and a child in shorts nearby. Sunny day, clear sky.

Dim sum buddies meet up before self-defense class

Two older women stand on the sidewalk outside a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown. One, with short grey hair and glasses, leans toward the restaurant window carrying a white tote bag. The other, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat, green coat, and floral dress, stands beside her looking ahead. Warm sunlight falls across the red brick wall behind them. A handwritten flyer taped to a weathered, paint-peeling pole in Vancouver's Chinatown advertises self-defense classes in Chinese kung fu, promising to teach how to defeat multiple attackers. Below the flyer, the pole is painted with an orange mural of fruit-laden branches.

Chinatown hair

The interior of a Chinatown hair salon viewed through its glass storefront. Chinese characters and the word HAIR are painted on the window. Two people are visible inside — one seated in a stylist's chair, another resting in a waiting chair. A Schwarzkopf hair colour poster and a no smoking sign are affixed to the glass. An older man stands on a Vancouver street looking directly at the camera with a calm, steady gaze. He wears a patterned head wrap, a long burgundy scarf, a floral shirt, and a green jacket, and carries a large rust-coloured cushion under one arm. Trees are softly blurred behind him. A woman walks away from the camera along a covered sidewalk in Vancouver's Chinatown. Her curly hair catches the warm light. A red ornamental lamp post and parked cars are visible in the background.

A yellow sports car sits at a red light in front of a Chinese restaurant on the corner. Pedestrians walk by through the crosswalk. It is night time and vibrant lights from businesses along with streetlights help to illuminate the scene.
