Breaking, new, by me:

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Thursday arrested an executive at a Canadian cybersecurity firm in connection with an investigation into the ShinyHunters hacking group that recently relieved the FBI of sensitive data on thousands of agents, multiple sources tell KrebsOnSecurity.

From the story:

"Dubrovsky’s LinkedIn profile states he is the author of Cyber Extortion Strategic Response, a 252-page book that promises to “take readers beyond the ransom note and into the decisions that determine how an organization responds, recovers, and protects what matters.”

edit: Cypfer said Dubrovsky was a managing director until leaving in Nov. 2025, not an ex-founder as his LinkedIn profile says. This link backs that up, saying he was COO and managing partner:

A book cover picture on Amazon, of a book called
Cyber Extortion Strategic Response
by Ed Dubrovsky.

A practice manual for leaders on managing coercive events, negotiation and settlement strategies, is the tagline.

The cover art shows a man in a suit with his back to us and facing a sunset and a brick path that diverges in front of him. Beyond is a misty countryside and mountains.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Remind you of anyone in particular? Seems to be a tried-and-...well, tried approach. Can't wait to see who's next.

Would be even more interesting if he was really working for the Canadian government.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange what's the behind-the-name-title for a jailbird ?

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange It's hard to put into words the sheer fractal wrongness of someone treating ransomware incidents as a matter for suit-chad, alpha negotiator and high agency bro; rather than the most meticulous IT dweeb who ever triple-checked a backup for reasons that probably go beyond professionalism and into coping with their need for order and risk management through systems administration.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange I'm concerned about the Trump admin exploiting the opportunity to point fingers at Canada.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange Wild. I can absolutely see ransomware negotiation involving saying one thing to the ransomware operators and another to the clients, and the truth belonging to neither of those communications. That would look absolutely ass in text format in court though.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange
how the story started is so intriguing:
FBI seemed to misattribute ShinyHunter's characteristics, so they retaliated and asked for correction.
we need a hacker group to target surveillance agencies or departments.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange my wife’s uncle runs a shipping company and one of his ships was abducted by Somali pirates, and his crew held for almost a year. Yes, negotiators and intermediaries make piracy a viable business, but that doesn’t solve the ordeal of 30-something families terrified for their loved ones.
