Today is "Ganesha Chaturthi", the birthday of the Hindu god Ganesha. I wrote about it earlier. ๐Ÿ‘‰

Today, in Udupi I attended a "Gana Homa" which is an offering into fire to invoke Ganesha to seek his blessings. (Gana โ‰ˆ gaNa; see the earlier post. Similarly, Homa โ‰ˆ hoama.)

Some pictures and videos from today's hoama. ๐Ÿ‘‡

(there was also a feast but no pictures).

Today is "Ganesha Chaturthi", a Hindu holiday observing the birth of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god with the iconic elephant head. Best wishes to all who observe the day.

If you don't know and are interested, here is the myth behind why Ganesha is named so and has an elephant head: ๐Ÿงต

[Attached picture courtesy my sister.]

A light brown clay figure of Ganesha decorated with garlands of yellow mums, some white mums around the shoulder, red roses above the white mums, and a red rose at the feet.

This day two years ago wife and I began a 3-day road trip that altered our life trajectory: Visiting from US, we left Bengaluru to give tech talks at Udupi colleges, and now we practically live in Udupi, doing things we never imagined we would.

All changes for good AFAICT. I hope and pray the changes and the experience remain, grow. ๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Some pictures from just the first ~5 hours of the trip:

  1. Shot from inside a moving car
  2. Koodli, confluence of rivers Thunga and Bhadra to form the mighty Thungabhadra
  3. Sharadaa temple, installed ~13 centuries ago
  4. Sharaawathi river, heading into Linganamakki Dam

Lush green hills with several white windmills on top. Blue skies filled with white, gray fluffy clouds. Soft early morning sun falling on the hills. Wide angle shot of two rivers meeting. Screen left, the water is red due to dirt from fresh rains. Screen right, the water is green. Green tree-lined banks on both sides of the river(s) (and the combined river is very wide). Bright blue sky with some white clouds. Sunlight highlights the clouds as well as parts of the river water. A Hindu temple on a river bank. Two small buildings on the side, larger one in the middle. The middle building has three cupolas; the other two buildings have one cupola each. All buildings are painted blue and red. The cupolas are painted gold. A large tiled yard with a roof overhead in front of the buildings. Green trees in the background. A river with greenish water. Lush green trees and bushes on both banks. Blue skies with white clouds. Sunlight falls on the greenery and the river water.

Today, the 4th day of Shraawana month in the Hindu lunar calendar, is Naaga Chathurthi; tomorrow Naaga Panchami. Both days honor serpents (and snakes) with prayers made to the lord of serpents.๐Ÿ

In some traditions, women visit brothers on Panchami and get presents.๐ŸŽ

A 4-part mandala drawn in white chalk on a rough concrete surface (which happens to be outside a home's entry gate connected to the sidewalk). At the top is a single mandala of flower petals. The next row has three parts. The middle part is a wheel in motion with six lotus petals at the wheels outer edge. On either side of this part are drawings of a pair of snakes. One snake in each pair is a bit smaller, presumably to indicate a young one.
