I went to SF pretty much just for Mount Tam this time. After grabbing lunch with an old friend, I did the 50 mile ride to Mount Tam. It was way hotter just slightly inland in the Marin headlands. Had to do a steep climb on the road before getting to the gravel. The gravel part: Railroad Grade, which was the route of Mt Tamalpais Railroad, which used shay locomotives to climb the 7% crooked grade. It closed because the paved roads allowed cars to get to Mount Tam. The trail was quite rocky and bumpy, so I rode slowly and walked the roughest part.

The sun highlights some back lit leaves in a forest, casting dappled lights onto the dirt trail Bright dappled light on a dry forest floor under tall and straight trees Green leaves frame a small trickling waterfall The sun shines down a slope through a forest Dappled light on the dry forest floor beneath crooked trees

Back to Olene and Lost River, in a different light later in the afternoon.

Looking down a hill covered by arid yellow grass with a gravel double track. Beneath the hill is a paved 2 lane road and a river. A small railroad bridge crosses this river. On the other side of the river is a greener hill. Looking up a hill covered by dry yellow grass and dotted by small trees. A double track leads up the hill in the foreground. Looking down a hill covered in dry yellow grass as the ruins of a small concrete building. Beneath the hill is road and a river. Across the river is a dry yellow field and some mountains.

A tree towers over a rough gravel double track road through the farmland, leading to a hazy landscape. Trees by a gravel road appear layered in the hazy landscape. In the distance is the silhouette of a mountain. Gravel road passes through arid landscape with sparse trees and dry forest floor Single track through dry yellow grass going up a little hill

Almost getting to central Dairy, my turnaround point. This place is called something like Swedish bend (forgot if "bend" is the right word), presumably named after the Swedish workers who blasted through rocks to build this line here.

A little dirt trail partially blocked by rocks carves through a small valley, leading to some trees in the distance. A highway above a small carved valley frames a tree in the distance

A metal railway sign shaped like a slim parallelogram in the midst of grass, dandelions, and wildflowers. There are few trees in the background. An old grade crossing railway sign shaped like a large metal rectangle with an "X" in it leans over in the grass

The next morning, I rode 11 miles of gravel in Forest Park. This is totally worth it. It was initially cloudy but the sun came out around 11 am.

Soft sunlight shines through a forest, creating ray-like patterns through the leaves and casting dappled light on ferns on the forest floor and the gravel road. A thin fallen tree sits diagonally in this photo, covered in moss. A thick tree trunk with a lot of moss. Below it is a little white milestone saying 7 1/2. The sun began to come out, illuminating a slice of the forest floor by the trail. Soft sunlight illuminates some straight and tall tree trunks in the forest
