The next day, August 22, I got up early to catch CalTrain to San Jose, where I would transfer to the Coast Starlight for San Luis Obispo. I took this photo just before I left the hostel. I like CalTrain's new electric trains, and I met 2 MAMILs who considered their bikes so precious that they would not tie them to the bike rack on the train.

Trees frame the scene and a person by an outdoor table enjoying the scenery. In the distance is the SF bay and Golden Gate Bridge under a little cloud.

I climbed Highway 1 from Muir Beach back to the east side of headland. After a quick dinner by what looked like a block party (very white neighborhood so I was the only person of color there), I returned to Sausalito and then San Francisco at dusk.

Looking across a little harbor at a row of colorful little houses reflected in the harbor. The sun was setting and the pink color of the clouds was fading. In the foreground is a seagull taking off, with motion blur.

Puget Sound gumweed by Highway 1 near Stinson Beach (I don't like it when Pixelfed's location database does not include unincorporated regions like Stinson Beach and does not show the state/province because at least in the US, there are cities with the same name but are in different states)

I didn't take photos during the long and steep descent to Stinson Beach; I already did last time I visited. But I didn't visit Stinson Beach, so I started taking photos again riding on Shoreline Highway.

Three people were riding mountain bikes up a very steep paved road on the curve. On both sides of the road are many trees. In the distance is the bay and Richmond bridge.

I went to SF pretty much just for Mount Tam this time. After grabbing lunch with an old friend, I did the 50 mile ride to Mount Tam. It was way hotter just slightly inland in the Marin headlands. Had to do a steep climb on the road before getting to the gravel. The gravel part: Railroad Grade, which was the route of Mt Tamalpais Railroad, which used shay locomotives to climb the 7% crooked grade. It closed because the paved roads allowed cars to get to Mount Tam. The trail was quite rocky and bumpy, so I rode slowly and walked the roughest part.
