Morro Bay estuary, as I was descending the hill at the state park. Last time I visited (November 2022), it was sunny. It looks very different when foggy. That's it for today. Tomorrow I'll edit and post photos from Hazard Peak and Montana de Oro State Park.

Some people think in terms of nation-states as if they're homogeneous, while I prefer to think locally, because I encountered very different ecosystems within walking distance, due to different local micro-climates. I started with dry grassy fields when I entered the park, but soon I got into a forest in a valley. I think this is the fungus ramalinaceae, which I've never seen outside the SLO area.

Riding into the clouds at Morro Bay State Park. I ended up hiking most of the way because much of the trail is too technical for gravel bikes, so everyone else rode mountain bikes.

A single track trail leads into the scene up a foggy mountain. By the trail is a field of wild fennel with dry stalks and yellow flowers.

August 22-24, my second trip to San Luis Obispo. I stayed at the hostel near the train station. It's much smaller and more intimate than the hostels at major cities, and the staff and volunteers made an effort to make us feel at home. They cooked for the guests and invited me to join. What ruined the night was that the hosts were all white men and said many things that came off racist and sexist to me no matter how they tried to pose themselves as enlightened and open minded. I wanted to ride gravel on August 23, since last I visited was before I bought my gravel bike. It turned out that I got into mountain bike terrain and hiked most of the way, but it was fun. As a result, I came back late and had dinner outside by myself. Here I just set off for the trip, riding on Foothill Blvd, on my way to Morro Bay State Park.

You need to squeeze through, over and around lots of rocks on the Bishop Peak trail in San Luis Obispo.

Two huge boulders occupy most of the image, one vertically the entire left side of the photo. There is another smaller boulder that uses just over half of the right side of the image. A hiking trail squeezes between these rocks, though in real life, it's not quite as tight as it looks in the image. Beyond the boulders are some green shrubs, and past those is the view of the green Los Osos Valley and half of Cerro San Luis mountain in San Luis Obispo, California. More mountains are in the hazy distance, and the sky is blue once you get above the haze. Small silhouetted shrubbery is in the center right edge foreground, overlapping the smaller boulder. Both boulders are in the shadow of Bishop Peak, the tallest of the Nine Sisters.
