Well, the results from the 'weather jury' are in and no surprise to learn that Summer 2026 was the UK's hottest on record (according to provisional data from the Met Office).
2026 is definitely going to become the new most memorable summer, replacing the record-breaking summer of 1976 as the go-to reference.
The UK has 'enjoyed' a spring and summer of persistent heat with five widespread heatwaves and 40 days of temperatures above 30C° (86F°), smashing the previous record of 34 days.
I was looking for a photograph I have taken locally this summer that goes some way to illustrate what we have just experienced and I thought this image, taken on 12 July down on Seaburn's promenade in Sunderland, NE England, just about sums the season up.
Four people chilling out on a bench, soaking up the sunshine and warmth under cloudless blue skies – what a summer it has proved to be!

I actually think this photo is the best of all the ones I took with one roll of Kodak film and the Canon A1 hanging round my neck in Bologna this summer.

I’m just glad I spotted the image and captured it accurately .

Bologna, in early August, the summer was sweltering.

And the riots had only just ended.

This summer we were back in Italy and also spent about a week in Bologna.

It’s almost become an annual tradition.

And when I travel, I always take far too many cameras with me.

Especially now, at a time when I sometimes question the point of my analogue photography...

What for, and for whom ?

But on arriving in Bologna, I did end up rediscovering one of my oldest camera companions,

my Canon A1, loaded with a roll of Kodak 400 Ultramax

Mainly to see if I could find a bit of joy in taking photos just for the fun of it.

Something I did notice whilst wearing my A1 round my neck on walks around town... The camera is really heavy to have round your neck all the time!

And I haven’t mentioned it yet, but Bologna was absolutely sweltering in early August!

Every year we stay just round the corner from this building, and I suppose I do rather like it…

Will I be able to resist the temptation to photograph it in a few weeks’ time ?

The building was on scaffolding for restoration, so my sense of wonder at its beauty was somewhat dampened...

Let’s stay here for a moment at the same bar in the same town, with the same camera… Probably a different time of day. And yet there’s clearly a loyal local clientele. As tourists, they certainly won’t miss us.
