Who needs a clear image of the lunar eclipse when you can have a blurry one photobombed by trees?😂

Tonight’s partial eclipse was obscured by the forest near my vacation place in Idaho when it reached its maximum, at 96% coverage. Still, I was able to get a few photos of it with Earth’s shadow receding, as Luna eventually cleared the trees. I’ll share those soon, but for now here’s my first two shots near peak eclipse. And now to bed.

Branches of pine needles in silhouette against a blurry full moon during a partial eclipse, with a bright white crescent at its western edge and the rest of the lunar surface a deep red. The same lunar eclipse as in the previous photo, but with the moon more in focus and the pine branches blurred into vague dark shadows. The white crescent is overexposed, with a smudged curved edge, while the red surface in Earth’s umbra shows a few crater details.

Lunar Eclipse 🌑

I've been up for almost 24 hours. Hiked up and down a hill for a couple of hours and basically didn't get any shots except this one because of the cloud and tree cover. 🙃

Goodnight everyone. ✨

Partial Eclipse

Like most of Western Europe I wanted to try and get a shot of the Lunar eclipse of the Sun, and knowing I wouldn’t get as good a shot as NASA etc I was more interested in watching the people watching the eclipse. As it happened, though, the shots weren’t too bad.

Prior to the day, I spent some time looking into whether even attempting the shots would reduce my camera’s sensor to a block of molten glass and plastic.

Lots of talk about the risk, but AI agreed with me that plenty of visual light stopper, and not leaving the camera focused on the Sun for too long would mitigate the risk sufficiently. Even so, I used my back-up Sony A7R4 camera, rather than my main A7R5…

Interesting to see that I sometimes managed to retain some colour in the shots and other times none. Settings were around 1/100 or 1.500, f5.6 or f8…

We were gathered atop Nibley Knoll in the south of Gloucestershire, overlooking the Rover Severn and at the site of the monument to William Tyndale; strangled then burnt at the stake for the heinous crime of translating the Latin Bible into English.

My earlier test shot, showing sunspots on the left side of the Sun.
