Strong yellow of a wild coneflower from the edge of the field, meets its centre in the centre of the picture on a mild green-blurred background. Slightly offset below is a still closed bud, on which a fly wrapped in dewdrops is still slumbering. ••• Starkes Gelb eines wilden Sonnenhutes vom Feldrand, trifft auf mildem grün-verschwommenen Hintergrund ihr Zentrum in der Bildmitte. Leicht versetzt unterhalb ist eine noch verschlossene Knospe, worauf eine in Tautropfen gehüllte Fliege noch schlummert.

I like revisiting photos I’ve already edited and having another go, just to see where it takes me this time. It looks gloomy, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Square black-and-white photograph. A narrow paved lane leads from the lower centre towards two stone gateposts topped with round ornaments in the distance. Tall, leafless trees line both sides, their branches intertwining overhead to form a tunnel-like canopy. Dark trunks and dense undergrowth frame a brighter central opening, where the distant trees fade into mist. Fallen leaves cover the roadside verges, and irregular patches of reflected light mark the damp road.

Through darkness, we come to understand what light means to us. I would even go so far as to say: without darkness, there is no light. In physical terms, of course, that makes no sense: darkness is the absence of light. In photography, though, an image takes shape through contrast, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. Without contrast, there is no image. Even Malevich’s “Black Square” needs something to stand against: its frame, its surroundings, the context in which we view it.

Here, I darkened the foreground and sky more than I normally would. In doing so, I worked against the grain of the image, something I usually try to avoid. But this time I wanted to do as the Stones say: “Paint It Black”.

Square black-and-white photograph. A nearly black sky fills most of the upper frame, fading to a narrow band of light along the distant horizon. Several small wind turbines stand on a pale ridge left of centre. Overlapping hills become progressively lighter and less distinct in the distance, while a nearly black foreground slope descends from left to right across the lower portion. The light is strongest near the left horizon, where a few bright cloud edges are visible.

Probably the 42 millionth photograph of a wind turbine in the clouds. A cliché by now. But it’s my cliché, my moment, my memory. The image may not be unique. The moment was.

Square black-and-white photograph. A single wind turbine stands near the center of the frame, its mast and three blades partly obscured by a dense band of low cloud or fog. The lower third is filled with bright, textured cloud, while the upper two thirds are a dark, nearly featureless sky. Only the upper part of the turbine clearly emerges above the cloud layer, creating a small, bright geometric shape against the darker background.

I moved recently and I’m now getting to know my new surroundings. I haven’t taken many photos here yet, but I dutifully carry my camera on every walk, trying to find some order in the chaos.
