The Lighthouse That Learned to Move

Nauset Light—with a little taste of Cape Cod.

My daughter spotted the coincidence: the Cape Cod chips she had brought along featured the very lighthouse we were standing beside.

I have always thought a lighthouse was supposed to be one of the more settled things in life.

It stands there.

The sea moves.
The ships move.
The weather changes.

But the lighthouse stays put.

Apparently, I was wrong.

Nauset Light moves.

The lighthouse we see today in Eastham wasn’t even originally built there. The tower was built in 1877 as one of the Chatham Twin Lights and was moved to Eastham in 1923.

And then the Atlantic started doing what the Atlantic does.

It kept eating away at the coastline.

By 1996, less than 35 feet remained between the lighthouse and the cliff edge.

So someone had to make a rather unusual decision:

Move the lighthouse.

Not repaint it.

Not reinforce it.

Not tell the sea to behave itself.

Move it.

The entire 48-foot tower was moved about 300 feet inland to a new location across the road.

A lighthouse with an unusual history.

Standing there today, looking at that magnificent red-and-white tower, you would never know that it has already changed address twice.

It seems almost amusing.

We normally admire people who stand their ground.

But perhaps we should also admire those who know when the ground is no longer where it used to be.

Because sometimes circumstances change.

The familiar shore begins to disappear.

The things that once felt secure no longer are.

And then comes the difficult question:

Do I hold on—or do I move?

Nauset Light offers a rather elegant answer.

It didn’t stop being a lighthouse because it moved.

It simply carried its light with it.

When the sea comes closer, sometimes you have to move.

Perhaps resilience isn’t always about staying exactly where we are.

Sometimes it is about recognising that the landscape has changed—and having the courage to move without losing what matters.

The lighthouse moved.
The light stayed.

Maybe that’s the real lesson.

The Ocean Doesn’t Take Appointments

We boarded the whale-watching boat at Hyannis with one simple objective:

Find a whale.

The instructions seemed straightforward enough.

Go out to sea.
Look at the ocean.
Wait.

The last part, as it turned out, was entirely up to the whale.

We had cameras ready.

Phones ready.

Eyes scanning the horizon.

Everyone seemed prepared for the great moment.

The whales, apparently, had not received the schedule.

And then they began to appear.

And then—there it was.

First a spout rising from the water.

Then a dark back breaking the surface.

Then another.

Two humpbacks, briefly above the surface.

For a few precious seconds, these enormous creatures revealed themselves to us before slipping quietly back beneath the waves.

Click. Click. Click.

We were beginning to get the hang of it.

And then, without warning, one of them breached.

For one glorious, impossible moment, this enormous creature launched itself out of the water.

We all saw it.

Nobody photographed it.

It happened too quickly.

By the time our cameras were pointed in the right direction, the whale was back where it belonged—underwater.

And somehow, I think that made the moment even more special.

We are so accustomed to photographs, videos and screens that we expect everything worth seeing to remain available for us to capture, replay and share.

But the ocean doesn’t work that way.

The whale appears when it chooses.
The moment arrives when it arrives.
And then it is gone.

And then, a wave goodbye.

Perhaps that’s part of the wonder.

Some moments are meant to be witnessed, not captured.

We went looking for whales.

What we found was also a little lesson in patience.

And a reminder that the world doesn’t always perform on demand.

Sometimes you just have to wait, watch—and be ready when it decides to say hello.

When MIT Lets the Wind Decide

MIT sailing on the Charles River

There they were on the Charles River… little red sails carrying three very familiar letters:

MIT.

I couldn’t help smiling.

Somewhere behind those sails is an institution associated with equations, algorithms, engineering, artificial intelligence and people clever enough to understand things I have long ago accepted that I probably never will.

And yet, here they were.

In little boats.

Depending on the wind.

Looking at them brought back something my former Scottish boss once told me about sailing.

He said he could often tell where the wind was coming from by the hair on the back of his neck.

I remember being amused by that at the time.

But perhaps there was more wisdom in it than I realised.

You can have instruments, calculations, forecasts and sophisticated technology. But when you’re actually out there on the water, sometimes you still have to feel the wind.

And adjust your sail.

Sailing beneath the Boston skyline with Storrow Drive along the riverfront.

Perhaps life is a little like sailing.

We make our plans, calculate our course and imagine that we know where we’re headed.

And then the wind changes.

Maybe the trick isn’t to fight it or complain about it.

Maybe it’s simply to notice.

Feel which way the wind is blowing.
Adjust the sail.
Keep going.

Although, knowing MIT, I’m reasonably certain somebody on those boats could explain the mathematics.

I was quite happy just watching.

US Visa of Biden-awarded Iraqi National Revoked

The United States officially revoked the US visa of Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi, the Iraqi national who was awarded by the failed Biden Administration in 2022, according to US State Department citing her placement on the Terror Watchlist of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In a New York Post report, Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi’s alleged links to the Islamic terrorist regime of Iran and Iran-backed militias in Iraq drew headlines. She was also the target of two Republicans in the US House of Representatives accused of being the “key enabler of terrorist funding in Iraq.”

To put things in perspective, posted below is the entire statement of the US State Department. Some parts in boldface…

The U.S. Department of State has revoked the visa of an Iraqi national who was presented an award by the Biden Administration for her purported role in fighting corruption and her advocacy for “gender equity.”

Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi was given the International Woman of Courage Award in 2022 by former Secretary of State (Antony Blinken) and former First Lady Jill Biden.

The award recognized “women from around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, and the empowerment of women and girls, in all their diversity.”

This Iraqi national’s visa has now been revoked by the State Department following her placement on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Terror Watchlist. She is no longer present in the United States.

Under President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, suspected terrorists will never be allowed to remain in the United States.

The Lighthouse That Isn’t Quite a Lighthouse

When I first saw this structure at Marblehead, Massachusetts, I assumed it was a lighthouse.

But something didn’t look quite right.

Where was the familiar solid tower? The sweeping beam of white light? The little keeper’s cottage beside it?

Instead, there stood this rather elegant skeleton of iron, holding a small green light against the sky.

So I looked it up.

It is a lighthouse. Marblehead Light, built in 1896. But unlike the traditional masonry towers we usually picture, this one is a cast-iron skeletal tower, an unusual design for New England.

And that little green light isn’t there merely to look pretty.

It is a navigational aid, marking the left side of the channel as boats enter Marblehead Harbor and quietly guiding them on their way.

I found something rather appealing about that.

We often think of a lighthouse as something that stands majestically in the distance, sending its beam across the darkness.

But this one seems to say something simpler:

You don’t always need to illuminate the whole world.
Sometimes, a little light showing the way is enough.

And perhaps that is true of people, too.

Some lights are meant to be admired.

Others are simply there to show the way.

The Flags at Half-Staff

I noticed the American flag flying at half-staff at Red Rock Park in Lynn.

Later, I saw the same thing in other places as we drove around.

I wondered why.

It was in honour of Dolly Parton, who died this week at the age of 80.

There was something moving about seeing the American flag lowered in respect for an artist. Not just an artist, either, but someone whose life reached far beyond music.

Dolly gave generously to education, healthcare and disaster relief. Her Imagination Library alone has given hundreds of millions of free books to children around the world.

I have always liked the way “Islands in the Stream,” the lovely song she sang with Kenny Rogers, makes you want to drift away somewhere else:

“Sail away with me
To another world…”

And now, seeing the flags lowered for her, I found myself thinking about something else.

Perhaps this is one of the beautiful things about a society—that it can pause, even briefly, to say:

We noticed what you gave us.
We remember you.
And we are grateful.

That little gesture of lowering a flag suddenly felt like a much bigger thing.
