If I didn't watch it fly in I doubt I'd have ever noticed it. Slightly smaller than a bald eagle, they're also huge birds (dinosaurs!).

More July outings. A nice hike on the Iron Goat Trail near Stevens Pass (7/8/26). This hike is along the old railroad grade, not difficult, wildflowers, butterflies, and tunnels. Looking back at these photos I see the summer is fading away.

Pilated Woodpecker ➡️

Did my best to get these shots, it was very dark under the canopy of trees and a fast bird, so high ISO was essential.

This was my first time seeing this bird with my camera, I've seen one 4 to 5 times previously including the afternoon before while running or hiking with my camera. The next day I went to another location far from where I saw one running and the first thing I heard was it's loud and obnoxious call. Since I'd heard it the day before I knew exactly what it was and found it quickly.

These birds are really cool and look so much like the cartoon version of Woody Woodpecker.

On another note... Sky Shark got very few likes yesterday and is unhappy.

Washington.- El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, amenazó este lunes con bombardear «sin piedad» Omán si el país árabe se interpone en el diálogo entre Washington y Teherán sobre el control del estrecho de Ormuz.

«Si Omán se interpone (en el diálogo con Irán), los bombardearemos sin piedad», aseguró abiertamente Trump en una entrevista concedida a la cadena Fox News.

Las palabras de Trump llegan después de que el portavoz del Ministerio de Exteriores iraní, Ismail Baghaei, asegurara a medios que Teherán había llegado a un acuerdo con Mascate para establecer rutas marítimas seguras a través del estrecho de Ormuz, paso estratégico clave por el que transita parte importante de los hidrocarburos que se exportan en el mundo.

Tras el reinicio de hostilidades entre Washington y Teherán, Trump ha asegurado que EE.UU. controla por completo Ormuz mediante su bloqueo militar, sin embargo, Teherán sigue manteniendo el estrecho cerrado.

El discurso de Trump frente a IránEn la misma entrevista concedida a Fox News, Trump también afirmó que existe un canal de comunicación extraoficial para las conversaciones de paz con Irán a través de la Guardia Revolucionaria Islámica, algo que el Gobierno de Teherán insiste en negar.

A su vez, el republicano dijo en la entrevista que el Gobierno de los ayatolás debería «izar la bandera blanca» de la rendición.

El mandatario estadounidense ha pronunciado estas palabras justo el día en que expira el plazo de 60 días contemplado en el memorando de paz firmado entre Teherán y Washington el 17 de junio.

Washington y Teherán se habían dado ese plazo de dos meses para negociar temas como el levantamiento de sanciones a Teherán, su programa nuclear o la situación en Líbano o Gaza, aunque el diálogo entre ambas partes ha acabado por estancarse. –sn–

Are you a Pelican or Pelicant? ➡️

I've seen these pelicans on another lake at a great distance, and then twice flying at different locations. On a tip by a co-worker (it's gotten around that I "take bird photos") I was told they've been at this lake and much closer to the road. I set out on Saturday and there they were! I got a lot of photos and videos of them feeding.

They work in a large group to scoop fish in shallow areas. The flock split in two, in the half that stayed closer, I counted over 100 in one photo!
