Rock in any form is the planet’s heart, but outcroppings, big or small, aren’t all that common where Glacial Lake Missoula once existed.

Thus, it makes me smile when I come across more than loose sedimentary rocks that are eroding.

Another cool morning with rain possible. It’s that time of year when the apartment’s temperature self-adjusts.

I haven’t run a fan (I don’t have AC) or heat for two weeks. Instead, I adjust my windows.

They slide horizontally so I can lock them in place.

I spotted this squirrel racing to the tree where it froze long enough to get a picture.

After that, it raced around, peaked at me from the backside, leaped onto the fallen tree, and continued playing peekaboo.

It was an entertaining few minutes.

While hiking yesterday, I saw a herd of seniors moving downhill in the distance. At least a dozen of them.

Given that I hike alone, it kind of made me feel like a senior predator.

Especially because I heard them long before I saw them. It was kinda strange.

The woman was walking her dog along the edge of the city. She survived, and is in serious condition in Seattle.

Summit aside, of the 4 other prominences on Blue Mtn this one, the 2nd highest, doesn’t have an official trail to the summit.

I found a faint one last year. The views are the best of the 4. Go figure.

Exploring the point has become a favorite activity.

A lovely ponderosa pine, perhaps lonely, but I didn’t take this picture for it.

I took it for the grass.

The grass in the foreground, unlike most of the background, is a gold and brown mix, creating a pattern. I feared I couldn’t capture it.

I shot out of here and raced to the mountain. The air was rich with autumn and the approaching rain, not to mention last night’s rain.

For half the hike it drizzled. If in the open, the breeze was frigid.

As I reached my car the sky opened up.

I’ve hiked 658 miles (1,059k) locally, and nothing compares (so far) to one hike: Blodgett Canyon. It instills the magic of gratitude for being alive.

A beaver pond is surrounded by golden grass and deadwood, pine tree forest beyond that. From behind the forest rises a scree slope dotted with trees that becomes three pinnacles of rock beneath a partly cloudy sky. High above trees with golden leaves mixed with pines rises a wall of rock that becomes separate prominences beneath a cloudy sky. A stream cascades over rock and around boulders as it plummets into a canyon. There's evergreen forest all around, and wooded slopes that rise on the right. The sky is partly cloudy. The scene looks out from a trail crossing scree that ends in a golden marsh where a stream is visible. A mountain's shoulder is visible to the right. From behind the trees on the left are rock walls. That’s quite a switch from virtually no moisture for two months.

As faint trails go, Milltower Ridge was faint, at times completely disappearing, but then there was nowhere else to go.

The ridge itself dictated my direction.

All I had to do was make sure I found the trail when it exited the ridge.

In a clearing on a ridge, the trail in the foreground seemingly disappears into the grass. There are short pines to the left, and ahead, a valley and mountains visible in the distance. The sky is clear.

In the valley, we have the traditional autumn colors. In the pine forest mountains, those colors appear in the various plants.

But there’s also another color that’s common, a greenish-gray bordering on a slate blue. It’s even found in some of the shale.

In a field of golden grass, logs behind, is common wormwood, a tall (waist high) plant with straight stems. Broken shale fragments in layers, dirt, pine needles, and other rocks around it.

Beyond a wooden fence on the prairie, and beneath a partly cloudy sky, rises Independence Rock in Wyoming, a mound of solid rock that stands alone. A red bluff dotted with green trees rises in central Wyoming, its layers clearly visible. The sky is clear, but hazy. Above golden trees rises sheer cliffs in Blodgett Canyon, Montana, the sky cloudy. The canyon is the result of glaciers, the tops of the canyon wall jagged. A rocky promontory in Glacier National Park in Montana rises beneath a mostly clear sky, the grass surrounding it a deep gold. The layers of sedimentary rock are easily visible, and there's snow around its base.
