In another sloppy tent I could see what our magazine. Two tiffie types were half-heartedly cleaning a well-used machine gun. In the tent was precious little, certainly not the 50 assault rifles one would have expected. We were divided up into our specialties; to get to Longa one had to have had a special training, or have told some convincing lies at The House. So I met my fellow mortarists, and in typical army fashion they were all pretty mellow guys. One was a divorced, unsuccessful lawyer. He got his 15 minutes of glory a couple of years later on Special Assignment, even though he was one of the first to resign when we went operational. The mortar crew had also only been there for a couple of weeks.The time had come to meet the troops we were hired to train. As we walked up to the training area I got a better idea of my surroundings. Our base was spread, about 500 m or more, along a huge river which looked deceptively slow-moving. This was Rio Longa; it still had 6 km to run to the sea. Along the bank were lush green reeds and huge mango trees. On one memorable occasion a couple of hippo came through those reeds to inspect our camp. It was in the middle of the night and they crashed through a few tents before returning to the river, never to be seen again. Not that I blame them; the Executive Outcome chaps, on the whole, were quite ugly and they had screamed awfully loudly! The other animals that came to visit us were some monkeys. They were black but had a heart-shaped white ring around their faces. The reason they came was to eat mangos; there were a lot of mango trees near the river. One bright spark decided to throw a mango at them; big mistake. That was solved by the owner buying 4 huge Jojo tanks, the catchment of the Foundries roof was huge, filled up the tanks much faster than I expected. Fresh rain water, who could ask for more?I started making … things. More kiln pots, with succulents in them, found some wire cages and started making plant holders with that. And. That rock wall. It looks nice, I think, but never again! As I said, I did this whole mission all by myself, rocks are heavy ….The first tomato from the French seeds and a snake that was in the garden. Found some old fencing and put up a trellis. At that point was not sure which climbing veggie I would plant. The above ground boxes were coming along nicely too.As the place where I am is up for sale…Gypsy on the Move?

This is a garden I started from scratch at an Artist’s Studio, Zwavelpoort, Pretoria East. As you see it was just a piece of Veld. As usual I did not have anyone help me, each spade of sand, each rock I carried myself. The photos in the ensuing series…
After getting a few beds well prepped I start planting a few things. Radish are the best for a quick crop. Then depending on the season a few other veggies that are “in season” Usually I plant from seed that I get out… the dustbin of where I am. People throw away a lot of food and even more seeds. My next mission is to get the kitchen staff to trow all veggie cuttings and peels in a container. Potato peels I found to be no good. Too much starch .. I think.
And as I said a Veggie Garden does not have to be ugly, or even untidy. Those pots with succulents? Waste from the Artist Bronze Foundry, crucibles for melting metal that are burned out. Heavy and durable. Then I am always glad to see little animals like Geckos in my gardens. They also eat Goggas, as I do not use ANY poisons , insects are a concern. But there are ways to deal with that, and the wild animals that raided her, monkey and Duiker were the problem with larger animals. The biggest problem was with Blowfly and any Squash type veggies. I found out , years later, that the Blowfly are invader species mainly, spoke to a conservation guy in St Lucia, he was hanging up traps, similar to one that a Gardening Club sent me here! Did not work! But. As we go along I will tell you what I did and how my crop was just too much for the place. I was eventually swapping veggies for biltong with a neighbor. Now that was a good trade!!!!

The Bottle Cottage
Thought we could take a look at the PALLETS part of this building today.
When collection bottles in Nelspruit I saw at the Glass place, they had pallets for free. Then big bins of glass off cuts. I can use this!
Long ago I met a chap that made Damp Proofing with Polystyrene, as you may well know that stuff is terrible for the ecology, just does NOT break down and go away. Recycling for something to become yet another piece of junk to be tossed in a landfill is…. Moronic. By dissolving Polystyrene into a chemical called Xylene until is get you get a thick liquid, that you then “paint” onto your problem wall. The , I called it Polyxylene here, is basically liquid plastic, when applied it soaks into the wall and sets in a very thin plastic … sheet? Inside the wall. Ok. I would need that but thought about what I had on hand. Pallets, glass and Polyxylene.
Now if I dissolved enough Polystyrene I could make a thick glue. Then use the big off cuts to put in the gaps of the pallets. Used silicone to attach the glass, coated that with thick Polyxylene, cruche different coloured glass into small pieces and glued them on. The thick Polyxylene takes a long time to dry, two days even in the hot Bushveld. But. Had other ideas for the Pallet Panels.
In the shed at VeloGecko was a lot of Roof Waterproofing cans of paint and those strips of clothe one puts down then paints over. This would protect the rather poor wood pallets are made of. As you see by the photos I did a few variations of these ideas, and the end result…….

We went sightseeing, saw a sign that said Restaurante and decided to go get something to drink. The restaurant was closed. It was a small building with quite a few bullet holes in the walls. Some of the windows were boarded up. Glass windows were rare in Angola. Their vegetation was sparse consisted mostly of the thick-leafed type of plant you find along wind-swept coasts. Just past the building was a huge sandstone cliff with the ocean crashing down below. It was like a scene from a movie. We had no time to get down to the beach. On the way back we saw some small informal markets; at that time there were none of these back in South Africa. They looked precisely the same as the ones you now find in the New South Africa: terrible. Sticks held together with string or strips of plastic, and roofs made of rusty pieces of tin. Raw chunks of meat hung from wire attached to the roof, alongside dried salted fish. I had never seen dried fish of this size before, only the tiny kapenta fish in Zimbabwe, but the smell and the flies made the idea of eating any of this lot somewhat repulsive. The fish had been cleaned next to the stall and a few months’ worth of innards just lay there rotting in the sun. This was our first glimpse of how unhygienic this country was. Our delicate city noses could not take much of this and we did not linger very long. We had been told a vehicle would take us to the training camp later in the afternoon, so we headed back to the airbase. It turned out that it was the same vehicle we were on and the kit underneath us was actually for us.Rate this:

Altro...The Mexican Chronicles – EightWe had instructions not to drink the water out of the taps; after my stint in the SADF I could not believe how dirty the showers and toilets were, and would not have wanted to drink from those taps anyway. Having been a civilian for the past 10 years had made me squeamish. I would soon be cured! We found a storeroom ourselves, with 5-litre bottles of water with Portuguese labels. As I have mentioned, no-one went out of their way to be helpful. The military being what it is, everyone has to have an image; perhaps this is to fool oneself about how dangerous the situation really is. We got a decent chow and a few beers at about 3 o’clock. Up till then it was warm bottled water. We were lent plates and pikstels but the kak-sleg store-man wanted them back.Later when I went on my first Pass, flew out of Caba Ledo, and it then looked like an old SADF camp. Clean!
Pikstel is a set , knife, fork , spoon. Kak-sleg is Shit- bad.

Last Sunday I was informed that GOA is going on the market and I must find alternative arrangements, for work and to stay. I know EXACTLY what I want to do with the last few years of my life, and to that end I am attempting to make a decent CV. I want to get out of been so much cyberspace firstly. Then I NEED to grow stuff and make gardens like at Zwavelpoort. I also would like to build real things with wood, not make photos of things, make some. I did put some feelers out and will start this week looking at these “organic” farms. Hope to find one in the Bush here, where I belong. Also an extra pair of …. trained eyes about the place will help with security. Well, wish me luck….

But here is my list for future reference.The 12 initial persistent organic pollutants (POPs), often called the “dirty dozen,” are a group of toxic, man-made chemicals targeted for global elimination under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
They are divided into three main categories:
Pesticides
Aldrin: Used on soils to kill termites, corn rootworms, and grasshoppers.

That the chemicals are in stuff passed by our safety boards is still been used is much harder to prove. One can see the incidents, even deaths of some children a while back… ALL gets blamed on the Informal Markets and… of course the foreigners….

Firstly the enema story. Man I have sat in the Rooms of the AA many times, many years, and have heard things that most would not believe. But never ever heard of an Alky getting his “fix” like this. You would think someone would have tried it, even just to not get “booze breath”.
Why they did it.
To avoid vomiting: The Maya brewed an alcoholic drink called balché or pulque and mixed it with wild tobacco, water lilies, or other hallucinogenic plants. Drinking large amounts of this toxic, bitter mixture caused immediate vomiting. Administering it rectally bypassed the stomach completely, allowing them to absorb the full payload without throwing up.
To reach rapid spiritual ecstasy: The Maya believed that extreme states of intoxication allowed them to commune with gods and ancestors. Rectal absorption enters the bloodstream rapidly, triggering an intense, rapid altered state of consciousness.

Ok. Now let’s look why the different results socially…. I found this:

This highly public setting acted as a natural deterrent against erratic, anti-social, or violent behavior.

Every 5 Star Lodge has at least one , crystal clear pool, and every one I have seen, the runoff just goes into the ground. This is what the Greenpeace site told me.

In Bushveld and game-lodge settings, this contaminated backwash or overflow endangers localized wildlife, amphibians, and sensitive aquatic ecosystems.
Climate Change? Have a theory just recently about this. We all know it is a money making thing, but too many people believe the Trust the Science “facts”, still!! After looking at poisons for one month only, the Climate Change is Mickey Mouse, even if all we read is true. Recently the Bees got a bit of attention, they die , we die. This is biologically sound reasoning. BUT. Few things, first it is NOT only if the Bees go, we are at a point that the loss of even one tiny species of insect more and we take another big step towards …well, Armageddon. Then, I have just checked on all the insecticides/pesticides. I was sure they ALL kill bees, then I researched and found out this is 100% true. We have not even looked at herbicides yet!! That is another big issue I shall get to, as Agri Chems are just as bad. Time…. I will get there.
The reason that this chemical became the do all and end all of a clean pool is not a surprise……

Bilbo Baggins said something along the lines of: ‘One ought to be very careful when one steps out of one’s door, as one never knows where one may end up.’I stepped out of the proverbial door with the intention of getting horribly drunk at the local pub, which was conveniently within walking distance. I was doing just this when someone I’d had a nodding acquaintance with ten years back in the army, walked into the pub.
We were both not working me by choice because I had just sold my house and inherited a nice sum of money, Trevor because he couldn’t find work at that time. Anyway, Trevor had heard that, somewhere in Pretoria, a company was looking for men with operational experience to train troops in some African country, and they were paying very well – in Dollars! He had a contact name: Sergeant Pelsur, a company name: Executive Something, and a telephone number he was too bloody scared to act on. Well, I’m not known to be a man who sits on his hands, so after a good few drinks, off we went to my girlfriend’s house to make the call. All went well and an appointment was set up for the following day.
This, by the way, was Monday. I gave Trevor some money for petrol and booze and we both tried to find our old army records. My girlfriend Charmaine came home and I told her the news. She took it quite well but her 17-year-old daughter, Samantha, was none too happy. And that is another tale with a Devil’s Tail attached. The next morning, after my customary breakfast of a six-pack and a few shots of vodka……. to be continued

Working on the Pen is Mightier than the Sword surmise, I looked at this Petition story. As you know, never being one for signing them, never mind making one up myself. This is a place I am looking for help! Not your money but time and expertise . There is a big list of what is needed and has to be done

Broader Pesticide and Chemical Petitions

You can look into broader active campaigns via platforms like Awethu or organizations like groundWork and the African Centre for Biodiversity which campaign against toxic agrotoxins and double standards on hazardous chemicals.
I shall write to the organization above, but hold little hope…. Awethu I shall not bother, more concerned about the colour of my skin than what I have to show them.
The only legal action I can find with Doom in it is that Preacher that sprayed “HOLY” Doom on idiots..
The “Prophet of Doom” Case: Rather than a consumer ban, legal action has successfully addressed the misuse of Doom. The Limpopo High Court issued a permanent interdict and a criminal conviction for assault against a pastor who sprayed congregants in the face with Doom insecticide under the guise of religious healing.
Perhaps someone reading this will know how to get a Doom Fogger Petition running? If so I will post it all over !!
