"Two blue jays occupy a tiny porch‑swing bird feeder, and the whole scene looks like a burst of backyard drama frozen in mid‑air. The feeder itself resembles a miniature wooden swing, complete with armrests and a slatted seat, hanging gently from thin chains. Blue jays during molting season crack me up. Here’s one with its head feathers just starting to come back—still a little muted—but the bird is as sassy as ever. I’ve come to think that their screams around the backyard are basically announcements to the rest of the crew that the buffet is open.

"A blue jay perches on a curved metal rod, holding itself with that proud, upright posture jays are known for. It's haircut season!

This is a Blue jay that is preening and has no head feathers.

As the weather gets cold some birds will lose a lot of feathers

It's haircut season!

This is a Blue jay that is preening and has no head feathers.

As the weather gets cold some birds will lose a lot of feathers all at once so they don't lose any during the winter and can stay insulated.

This is called catastrophic molt and is completely normal.
