Double the Loot

The local oak trees have been dropping acorns for the last week or so, and as a result many of the birds aren’t quite as interested in my feeders. The blue jays especially—why go for peanuts when acorns are everywhere? Acorns seem to be their absolute favorite.

Here’s a picture from a while back, taken during one of those times when the blue jays were stocking up on peanuts instead.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

"A blue jay—Cyanocitta cristata—stands boldly on a wooden rail, its posture full of confidence and mischief. Its feathers shimmer in layered shades of electric blue, soft gray, and crisp white, each one lying neatly against the next like carefully arranged tiles. The black markings around its face form a sharp, mask‑like pattern that gives the bird an alert, almost cunning expression.

Clamped in its beak are two whole peanuts, held crosswise with surprising precision. The jay’s beak is slightly parted, just enough to show how it has maneuvered both peanuts into place. You can almost imagine the quick, clever movements it used to gather them—one snatched, then the second tucked in like a prize.

The background fades into a soft blur of muted greens and browns, making the bird stand out as the undeniable star of the moment. Its eyes gleam with that familiar blue jay intensity, a look that says it knows exactly what it’s doing—and that it’s quite pleased with itself. The scene feels live

"A young blue jay perches on a slender branch, its body angled forward with the eager focus of a bird discovering the world. Its feathers are a soft, fresh blue—less intense than an adult’s—layered with delicate whites and charcoal markings that trace the wings and crown. The jay’s crest is lifted just slightly, giving it a look of alert curiosity.

Its head stretches toward a tiny leaf bud at the tip of the branch, beak parted as if reaching to inspect or nibble the new growth. The bird’s posture is full of youthful energy: toes gripping the bark, tail feathers fanned for balance, wings tucked tight but ready to flick open if the branch sways.

Behind it, the background melts into a gentle blur of greens and pale light, making the jay stand out like a bright note in a quiet forest. The whole scene feels intimate and alive—one small moment of a young bird learning its world, reaching for something new." - Microsoft Copilot

American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on July 16, 2026

Some of the camera settings I used to make this photo are at: https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2026Aug14_birds_and_cats/IMG_6137c_2026jul16_crow.html

An American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) was standing on the very top of an Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) tree near leaves of a Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vine in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on July 16, 2026. This crow was on watch duty and would warn the murder of any unapproved activity in the neighborhood or comment if the old human puts out stale bread.

Blue Jay Drama Hour

This image captures two blue jays in a moment of backyard drama — one screeching as it guards its prize, while the other watches calmly from the side as if thinking "get a grip."

"Two blue jays occupy a tiny porch‑swing bird feeder, and the whole scene looks like a burst of backyard drama frozen in mid‑air. The feeder itself resembles a miniature wooden swing, complete with armrests and a slatted seat, hanging gently from thin chains. Its wood is weathered and touched with mossy green, giving it the look of something that’s been part of the yard for years.

Inside the swing, facing the viewer head‑on, one blue jay is in full agitation. Its wings are spread wide, feathers flared in sharp blue and white layers. The bird’s beak is open in a fierce, screeching call — the kind of sharp, electric sound jays make when they’re fed up or laying down the law. Its body leans forward, chest puffed, every part of it radiating indignation.

On the left armrest of the swing sits the second jay, calm as a referee waiting for the shouting to stop. This bird stands upright, feathers smooth, head slightly tilted toward the commotion. Its posture is steady and unbothered, as if it

Blue Jay After the Molt

Blue jays during molting season crack me up. Here’s one with its head feathers just starting to come back—still a little muted—but the bird is as sassy as ever. I’ve come to think that their screams around the backyard are basically announcements to the rest of the crew that the buffet is open.

"A blue jay perches on a curved metal rod, holding itself with that proud, upright posture jays are known for. Its feathers look slightly uneven, giving the impression of a bird recovering from a molt — patches of softer beige show along its underside, and the blues on its wings and tail appear a bit muted, like fresh paint still drying. Even so, the bird’s colors remain striking: deep cobalt on the wings, lighter sky‑blue on the tail, and crisp black markings tracing its face and crest.

The jay’s beak is open mid‑call, as if it’s announcing its presence to the world or scolding some unseen rival. Its eyes are bright and alert, full of that mischievous intelligence blue jays carry. The background is softly blurred, a wash of gentle greens and browns that makes the bird stand out sharply, almost glowing against the muted backdrop. The curved metal rod beneath it adds a simple, elegant line to the scene, framing the bird without distracting from it.

The overall feeling is one of resili

It's haircut season!

This is a Blue jay that is preening and has no head feathers.

As the weather gets cold some birds will lose a lot of feathers all at once so they don't lose any during the winter and can stay insulated.

This is called catastrophic molt and is completely normal.

A black crow perched on a thin branch. The bird's dark feathers show subtle iridescence in the light and there are lighter brown patches from moulting. In the background blue-grey water sits below a stone retaining wall and a green lawn lined with trees and distant buildings.
