I've been so busy lately that I've not had much time to take photos. But here are some insects. #

This medium sized yellow butterfly with brown edges to its wings (as viewed from the topside of the wings) is a clouded sulphur butterfly. It's nectaring on some kind of catmint. You usually don't see the topside of this butterfly's wings, as they are usually closed at rest. Here is a small dragonfly with bright green eyes, a powder blue abdomen and a black and yellow thorax in a obelisk posture (head down, butt up) on a hot day. It is a male blue dasher dragonfly. This large dragonfly has a dark body and wings with brown and white patches on them. It is a male widow skimmer dragonfly. I saw this rather large black. white and yellow caterpillar climbing all over some not-very-healthy-looking milkweed. It is a Monarch caterpillar, a late instar I would guess based on its size.

More insects, including some big, solitary wasps.

A big katydid wasp on boneset. It is a solitary wasp that eats nectar, but the female will kill insects for her larvae to eat when they hatch. Another large solitary thread-waisted wasp on a coneflower. There are actually 2 wasps in this picture, a smaller one piggybacked onto a larger one. The larger one is the female and it appears she is ready to mate. A brown belted bumblebee checks out the pink flowers of the obedient plant, so called since if you push the flowers to one side, they stay put. A tiny blue fronted damselfly rests on the concrete walkway.

This is a large butterfly with dark brown to black wings with some orange, yellow and blue dots on the underside of its hindwings. It is a tiger swallowtail butterfly, the so-called "black morph." All black morphs are female. It is nectaring on a group of small bright purple flowers, tall ironweed (a fall wildflower). This is also a tiger swallowtail, this one has the usual yellow wings with black edges. The edges of its wings are quite ragged, and I cannot see any colors on its hindwings, so I think it is a male. It is nectaring on a big, spiky lavender thistle flower. This is not a butterfly, but a moth. It's small to medium in size and is often mistaken for a baby hummingbird, since it often hovers like a hummingbird. In fact, it is a hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe). It has reddish brown wings with clear "windows" in them and it has an olive colored body. To me it looks more like a flying shrimp than a hummingbird. It is hovering next to a big, spiky lavender thistle flower. This is a large Monarch butterfly. It has orange wings with black veins and edges and white dots along the edges of the wings and on its body. It just launched itself from the red clover flower below it when I took this picture.

It looks like there are 2 hummingbird kids zooming around the nectar feeder. They are fattening up for their trip south later this month. And the big, solitary wasps have started to appear.

This picture shows a female ruby throated hummingbird in mid-hover while it drinks from a nectar feeder. She's pretty stout, making me think she's the mom. This picture shows an adult male ruby throated hummingbird (The Yard Boss) resettling its feathers. It's red gorget is fully illuminated by the sun. I believe this is a different, slimmer female ruby throated hummingbird approaching the nectar feeder. This was a large wasp, about 1.5 inches long. Its head and thorax are black and it has orangish wings. It has a tiny waist connecting the thorax to the rest of its abdomen, thus leading to its name, "thread waisted wasp."
