I was talking about (etc) with @enriquericos@mastoart.social + @NatureMC@mastodon.online here's a cool local one not huge but good size- maybe close to 1 inch/couple cm long? but very narrow. I think this is the same kind I saw earlier in the year laying eggs in cocoon of the Forest Tent Caterpillars (of which we had a major explosion this year- did I ever share videos?) if so, this should have been a great year for them!

All pics same alt. Several views from different angles and degrees of closeness. A medium sized wasp- maybe as wide as a yellow-jacket but then 1 1/2 to 2 times as long? is perched on the long narrow leaf of a fireweed plant with bits of other green leaves visible and a blurred mostly green background with hints of other colours (mostly purply-grey) and some dark shadows. The wasp is an intense medium dark copper colour, shiny all over with shiny nearly trasnparent wings with dark veins which are held somewhat folded against its 'back' but wider as they go farther from the head and extending out to the sides a bit beyond the insect. The long legs are the same colour, maybe darker toward the tips (like the long dark antennae) and reach right to the edges of the leaf. All pics same alt. More insects, including some big, solitary wasps.

A big katydid wasp on boneset. It is a solitary wasp that eats nectar, but the female will kill insects for her larvae to eat when they hatch. Another large solitary thread-waisted wasp on a coneflower. There are actually 2 wasps in this picture, a smaller one piggybacked onto a larger one. The larger one is the female and it appears she is ready to mate. A brown belted bumblebee checks out the pink flowers of the obedient plant, so called since if you push the flowers to one side, they stay put. A tiny blue fronted damselfly rests on the concrete walkway.

A colony of paper wasps decided to build their nest in our garden, which was a nice opportunity to get to know them a bit. They are rather friendly and were ready to pose for a portrait.

Some paper wasps on their nest. It's a macro photo on great detail. The wasps have long orange antennas and orange legs and wings too. One is facing the camera and a few others are working behind it.

The face of a Mexican grass-carrying wasp ( mexicana).

The species was introduced from Mexico to southern France in the 1960s and has since become the most common digger wasp (sphecoid wasp) south of the Alps.

This species was first recorded in southern Germany in 1998, in Berlin in 2017, and in Hamburg in 2023.
