Wonderful weather and lots of animal activity along the coast this weekend. Osprey overhead, harbor seals in the surf, even a glimpse of what appeared to be a whale or two near the Kuchel Visitor Center. This photograph, taken Monday afternoon, shows a few gentle waves approaching the beach under a mostly blue sky. Two birds in flight (upper left, maybe a pelican and some type of gull?) provide a splash of color. Temperatures were warm each day of the weekend with generally mild winds. The current forecast suggests that warmer than normal temperatures could occur along the coast over the next couple of days. Bring extra water and enjoy your visit!

A beautiful day in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. This photograph is from the visitor center on Friday. Clear blue skies with an array of interesting cloud formations over a landscape that, from this location, includes a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and other plants in all shades of green and yellow. Whiskeytown Lake is visible in the center of the photo (bottom third) and, on this day, the lake was resplendent in colors of blue, green, and gold. Signs of previous wildfires were visible throughout the area. Of note were the gorgeous needles on the trees near the shore of the lake - certainly a good enticement for a walk if you are in the area.

The forest this week has been very pleasant. Moderate temperatures, some fog, some clouds, some sun, all of which make for good walking in the trees. This photograph (from Tuesday) shows a variety of conifer trees on a slope in Redwood National and State Parks. Green needles are seen here and there, as are sky colors, muted but blue at the time. Of note are the forest birds, including the brown creeper, which fill the forest with songs and calls. Should you find yourself in the forest, take a moment to stop and just listen. With luck, you may see the creeper working its way up a tree trunk, pitching bits of bark and such into the air as they search for food. As for this photo, a half dozen beautiful trees fill the scene, with bark colored reddish brown, tan, grey, and gold. The appearance of the bark varies from tree to tree, some with a spiral form, some with deep crevices. Bald Hills and the Redwood Creek watershed were generally obscured by smoke yesterday as this image from the trail to Lyons Ranch shows. The smoke was widespread, visible along Bald Hills road above Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Temperatures in the higher elevation areas have been in the high 80s and low 90s. This photograph shows blue sky (top) above smoke-shrouded hills (center) and dry, golden colored vegetation in the foreground. The hills in the middle ground are covered with deep green colored trees, except in the areas where active logging is occurring on lands adjacent to the park (a patchwork of clear-cuts runs from left to right in the middle third of the photo).

Red huckleberry in the forest understory of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday. The berries are just beginning to appear in this part of the park. This photograph shows two red berries (center right foreground and center left background) with sections of green stem and leaves making up the remainder of the picture. Subdued lighting leads to an overall cool minty green color despite the high noon timing of the photo taking. Evergreen huckleberry in the forest understory of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday. The berries are just beginning to appear in this part of the park. This photograph shows a deep blue berry (center) and a lighter green berry (left) lit by the sun, with sections of reddish -brown stem and green leaves making up the remainder of the picture. The background is generally not in focus, but shows a few additional branches and dappled sunlight on the forest floor. A location with ready access to sun and water resulted in this individual plant having a good amount of berries relative to neighboring shrubs.
