Beneath a partly cloudy sky the sun is setting behind the leafless trees of a winter hardwood forest. A couple inches of fresh wet snow covers the ground and most of the tree branches, sticking to parts of the trunks. A thick underbrush of leafless shrubs is also coated with snow. A small stream with snow-coated rocks runs through the middle of the forest, emptying into a large snow-covered mostly frozen lake beyond the trees. The snow is tinted gold where touched by the rays of the setting sun.

A close in look at the point where lake on the right meets the shore on the left. There are five gray rocks of irregular shape, three along the shore and two partially submerged just offshore. Several branches of a green leafy shrub are visible to the left along the shore. Small, rippling waves are reflecting the gold of an unseen sunset, creating interesting patterns on the lake surface.

A blue gray evening sky with a few clouds tinted gold by the sunset. We are standing beside the feeder stream for a lake. The stream is surrounded by a grassy marsh with large gray boulders scattered around, a cluster of small white flowers and a few short leafy shrubs. On our left, the marsh ends at the edge of a forest with a number of maples already turning bright reds and oranges. The water level of the reservoir is low, much of the lake bed is exposed around the edges, covered with a green leafy ground cover that resembles grass from a distance.

From a walk only ten minutes away from the city center. That's one of the things I really love about my hometown Kristiansand, you're never far from nature. And even the cloudy days are just wonderful. In this photo, although it might be difficult to see, the little lake is actually covered with a layer of ice.

We are standing a few feet uphill from the shore of a large lake that has frozen over and been dusted with snow. A mixed forest of leafless hardwoods, hemlocks and pines surrounds the lake. A wooden footbridge crosses the mouth of a small cove in front of us, leading to a grove of tall old pines and hemlocks across the cove. The cloudy sky is being tinted vivid pink and violet by the imminent sunrise. A few unfrozen patches of the lake below mirror these colors.

We are standing beside a pond at a small rocky, mossy break in the surrounding lush green forest. The evening sky is mostly cloudy, with a slim break just along the horizon filled with bright gold and orange sunlight. That break is allowing the recently set sun to tint the bottom of the clouds near the horizon dark pink, almost red. The rest of the clouds are gray with a slight violet tinge.

Moving towards fall colors in Isle Royale National Park. National Park Service camera images from the last few days show a number of trees already sporting colors of red, yellow, and orange. This image (from this morning) shows a gentle blue sky with a few streaks of white clouds over a deeper blue sliver of Lake Superior (center, left to right). The coniferous and deciduous trees that make their home on the ridge below are generally green in this late-summer view, with a few patches of fall color here and there, including center left and especially lower right.

Standing on a dark gray rock outcrop a few feet above the shore of a lake in the deepening blue gray twilight of post sunset. The sky is filled with wispy swirls of cloud, tinted bright pink with dark purple shadows by the recently set sun. This is mirrored almost perfectly on the very slightly rippled lake surface. A forest of mostly leafless hardwoods with a few evergreens encircles the lake, mostly silhouetted by the dim evening light.
