This is a black and white water sports photo in landscape format of a young woman surfing ahead of a breaking wave. Hermosa Beach, California (2013). Extending diagonally from the lower left corner upwards through the centre to the upper right is a breaking Pacific wave moving from right to left. Ahead of the wave is a maelstrom of foaming white surf. The water behind the wave slopes downwards with countless white streaks stretching away and at right angles to the crest. In the centre of the image is our young female surfer. The camera is two metres above the water and five metres from the surfer. She is standing on her surfboard and surfing from right to left. Our surfer is positioned on her board so she is standing at right angles to the board, body facing the camera, feet astride, crouched forward to maintain balance and looking ahead.
