A car and passenger ferry on its route from Xiamen island to the Chinese mainland, taken in 2018 for today.

We're on one side of a wide stretch of calm water, looking across to a city skyline of skyscrapers on the distant shore backed by a more distant range of hills. It's a bright day with a little cloud and haziness in the air so the sky appears pale and the landscape over the water is similarly faint. Our focus is on a reasonably small car and passenger ferry passing to the left in the middle distance. The vessel has white upper decks over a hull that might once have been a deep blue but is now closer to a slate colour with lots of signs of neglect in the form of scratched paintwork and rust stains. The main decks are bunched in the centre of the ferry and there are four of them, tapering slightly towards a small bridge on the very top, and each with some open deck spots for passengers to enjoy the view. We can see a handful of people in gaps on the decks but more are gathered towards the aft behind a gap where the red container on a truck stands out for its colour.

La imagen es una fotografía en blanco y negro tomada por la mañana en la Playa Sur de Peñíscola, con una composición serena y muy equilibrada centrada en el agua en calma. En primer plano se extiende una playa de arena con algunas piedras dispersas cerca de la orilla, donde el agua llega con un movimiento suave, casi sin oleaje. El mar ocupa la mayor parte del encuadre, mostrando una superficie prácticamente en calma que refleja con nitidez la luz del cielo y las embarcaciones ancladas. For this is West-Hinder II, one of three lightships that were used off the Belgian coast to mark banks for sea traffic between 1950 (when they were built) and 1994 (when they were replaced with platforms).

We're in front of a short stretch of dry, coarse land with some patches of dirt and short grass rising gently to a low white wall. Behind the wall there is a ship mounted on display, about forty metres long. The vessel has a red hull and white bridge structure about two thirds back with a red-and-white-hooped, cylindrical, beacon tower emerging from the bridge, topped with a grilled casing in which a a large lightbulb sits. The words "West-Hinder" are in bold white on the ship's hull. A thin, pale-coloured mast also sits forward of the bridge with a flared, basket-like cage near its top. There's a sky of cloud threatening rain with large patches of blue overhead and a few short, thin trees with light foliage are dotted around this rather industrial location.

This is a black and white photo in portrait format looking along the length of a long Chinese Dragon Boat from the stern, and located in a framed cover for the off season. Tai O, Hong Kong (2014). The camera is located aft of the stern and one metre above, positioned in above the centre of the boat and angled along the length towards the bow. The boat is very long, thin, with a sharp bow and stern, open, much like an oversized Canadian canoe. Extending the entire length of the craft is a central wooden plank. Mounted below and at right angles to the central plank are multiple (35) smaller planks of wood that stretch the short distance from one side of the hull to the other. The long and narrow boat reaches it maximum beam (width) in the centre of the length before tapering gently into a sharp bow. In the lower left corner of the photo, mounted in the stern is a stout piece of wood mounted on top of the last lateral plank, this stretches over the left side with two large vertical pins.

The is a dawn colour photo in landscape format of a small coastal cargo ship being towed backwards along a city river surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings with the raised Brickell Avenue bascule road bridge ahead. Miami River, Florida (2012). The lower 10% of the image is filled with dark and slightly rippled river water. Extending from the right edge of the photo to the centre is the aft section of the small to medium sized cargo ship, with the stern portion of the medium blue hull and white superstructure in view. The ship fills the entire height of the image, half the width and is viewed from 10m away. The blue hull, while clean is very dented with numerous ribs visible around the depressions in the hull. Above the rounded stern is the accommodation and wheelhouse superstructure with 3 decks of small square windows below the wheelhouse. For here's P&O Cruises Azura in Split, Croatia in 2023. She's a Grand-class ship - our favourite class; not too big, not too small - and ships of P&O, Princess, and now Carnival in Australia operate ships of this type.

It's a hot, sunny day with barely a cloud in the sky and those only in the distance as a small streak over the horizon. We're standing on the hard surface of a commercial port where we would be able to see out across a fairly calm blue sea to a strip of land were it not for a cruise ship obstructing much of the view. The ship is tied up alongside with its bow pointing towards us and to the left, and we're approaching it as are a number of people ahead of us. The ship's hull is largely white but the bow has a stylised form of the Union Flag painted on it, wrapping around the curved, pointing form. We can see a stack of decks rising up towards the middle and aft of the ship and at the front the glass-fronted bridge extends out past the width of the vessel to allow the officers full views either side.
