Fifty shades of green: moss, laurel and lichen covered stream banks, Mad River ravine, Peterson Memorial Park, Wolcott, Connecticut. July 7, 2020, 6:10 PM.

A small stream cascades over dark gray rocks. Its banks are also covered with large boulders and rock formations, many covered with several different varieties of moss and speckled with several shades of greenish gray lichen. Small thickets of laurel shrubs add leafy greenery to the landscape. he trunks of hemlock trees rise from the few patches of soil between the rocks.

A close in look at the point where lake on the right meets the shore on the left. There are five gray rocks of irregular shape, three along the shore and two partially submerged just offshore. Several branches of a green leafy shrub are visible to the left along the shore. Small, rippling waves are reflecting the gold of an unseen sunset, creating interesting patterns on the lake surface.

We are standing beside a pond at a small rocky, mossy break in the surrounding lush green forest. The evening sky is mostly cloudy, with a slim break just along the horizon filled with bright gold and orange sunlight. That break is allowing the recently set sun to tint the bottom of the clouds near the horizon dark pink, almost red. The rest of the clouds are gray with a slight violet tinge.

Beneath a brilliant blue summer sky with a few streaky, hazy clouds a quiet pond with hundreds of lily pads sits in a small, bowl-shaped valley between two ridges on our right and left. The shore in front of us is flatter and a bit marshy, with a dazzling thick carpet of green ferns meeting clusters of water grasses at the water's edge. Lily pads, ferns and water grasses are similar bright emerald shades of springtime. The pond and marsh are encircled with a forest of mature hemlocks, pines and assorted hardwoods sporting darker shades of green.

A sun-dappled patch of a pond's shoreline. This corner of the lake is shallow and filled with water grasses, merging almost seamlessly with a marshy shore covered with tall grass, ferns and small leafy shrubs. The trail we are walking is about to cross the pond's small outlet stream on a very rustic looking old dam several feet high and about the same in width, looking much like an old stone wall with a flattish top. Beyond the dam is a cool, shady forest of mature hardwoods.

We are standing on the floor of a hemlock forest. It has been raining, everything is damp. The ground is coated with hemlock needles, there are a few mossy rocks poking out. Little else is growing here beneath the shade of the hemlocks, just a very few tiny green leafy shoots. In the foreground a fallen tree is rotting away and falling apart into wood slivers. About 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) away a younger forest begins with a mix of smaller hemlocks and hardwoods and more underbrush. A giant, irregularly-shaped dark gray boulder sits alone at the edge of that forest, next to a boulder that appears to be a smaller piece of that giant rock.
