"Behind the Shot: I live in the Chilean Patagonia and spend my time exploring Torres del Paine National Park. I’ve seen this place in all its facets, and yet it always manages to surprise me. That particular morning, I was hoping to photograph the sunrise when I came across a couple of Crested Caracaras seemingly gazing at the mountain range. People often dismiss this species as a scavenger and rarely stop to observe its more intimate behaviors. I’d like all park visitors to remember that we share these breathtaking landscapes with countless forms of life that deserve our respect and consideration.

Bird Lore: Although caracaras belong to the falcon family, their habits are strikingly different from those of their faster-flying relatives. Crested Caracaras, the most familiar species, are widespread in open country from the tip of South America to the southern United States. They often feed as scavengers, joining vultures to dine on carrion, but they are also versatile hunters, catching everything from rodents and birds to snakes and scorpions. In addition to watching for prey from a perch or while flying, these long-legged raptors may walk on the ground to seek large insects or wade into shallow water to catch fish.

Judge’s Take (Sebastian Herzog): The Torres del Paine landscape has been photographed so many times that it’s very difficult to capture it in an original and fresh way. This photographer succeeded in doing so in an extraordinary manner by creating a unique composition that looks as if it were a masterpiece painting of the Romantic period. The reflection of the peaks on the lagoon in the background creates a visual association with the two caracaras in the foreground. The birds seem like they’re posing for the camera."

This is a colour wildlife photo in landscape format of a Gentoo Penguin, racing away with a small rock in its beak, having just stolen it from another penguin's nest (they use small rocks, stones or pebbles as a nesting material). Booth Island, Antarctica (2024). In the foreground is a large, smooth and sloping rock, stained a medium red or brown, that rises up from the lower left corner, extends over to the right margin and rises upwards to a little less than the quarter up level. In the centre of the photo is our thieving Gentoo Penguin hurrying from left to right. The penguin is viewed obliquely with right side and back in view, filling most the height of the photo and view from a few metres away and at the same level as the bird. In fact the photo was taken from five or more metres away, but with a long lens so the photo appears to be shot much closer. In the bird's beak is a small dark and sharp rock, probably no more than a few cm across. The sides of the bird's beak are bright

This is a black and white photo in landscape format of a rock and snow covered hillside with a large flock of birds in-flight and the top of a lighthouse in the background. Vardø, Norway (2024). In the foreground is a barren, dark and rocky hillside sloping downwards gently from the upper left corner down towards the lower right. Other than some sparse patches of grass: the ground is devoid of any other vegetation or trees. This is a black and white wildlife photo in landscape format of a Turkey Vulture soaring above a layer of clouds. Angel Island, California (2017). From the base of the photo and extending upwards to the half way up level and stretching across the image from left to right is a rough and undulating layer of brilliant white cloud. In the centre of the photo is our Turkey Vulture, often called a Turkey Buzzard (Cathartes aura). The bird is soaring above the layer of cloud with the wings extended. The bird is viewed obliquely with the front and left side in view, inflight from right to left and banking very slightly to the right and away from the camera. The camera is at the same level as the bird and at a distance of about five metres. The head is looking forwards and slightly downwards. The beak is large and hook shaped. Je suis un pic de la taille d'un merle doté d'un somptueux plumage bigarré, je suis plutôt forestier mais là, canicule oblige, je me suis rapproché des habitations humaines dont certaines proposent eau + nourriture ( vers de farine et vers de mouche déshydratés ).
