Day 257

Autumn on the promenade.

A symmetrical, octagonal gazebo stands on a paved beachfront promenade in Wales. The centre of the gazebo is made of brick with windbreaker walls between wooden benches. It is topped with a tiered, slate-shingled roof which is supported by wooden pillars that reach to the ground. In the background are tall amber dune grasses under a moody, overcast sky.

Valley of waves.

Aerial view of a rural valley under an overcast sky filled with storm clouds. In the foreground, a plowed agricultural field features parallel white mulch coverings for crops. A winding river lined with trees cuts through the valley floor, separating the fields of green and brown. In the distance, rolling hills rise beneath low clouds, with a cluster of industrial buildings in the landscape.

This library is so beautiful and unique. It was designed by Gunnar Birkerts and is known as the "Castle of Light" or the "Glass Mountain". It was inspired by Latvian folklore and literature. In traditional local legends, a sunken castle of light rises from the depths once the nation breaks free from foreign oppression and regains its freedom. It was originally designed in 1989 as Latvia was breaking away from the USSR.

When it opened thousands of people formed a human chain from the old library and passed the books hand to hand to relocate them to their new home in this building.

There were also millions of books that were in storage in different buildings around the city and now they're all able to be in one beautiful place.

I just really love libraries.

A monochrome view of the National Library of Latvia across the Daugava River. The building has an asymmetric, sloped facade which is lined with row upon row of rectangular windows that lead up to a peak with a three spoked crown on top. Bare winter trees line the water in front of the building under a moody, overcast sky.

Flowers on Wires

Opera Lane has flower balls and wire butterflies strung on wires above the street, but I guess everyone else is used to them or didn’t notice them, looking down at their phones or walking along. I noticed, and my neighbour walking the street noticed too....

https://inphotos.org/2026/09/07/flowers-on-wires/

Looking up a narrow pedestrian shopping street with rows of hanging decorations strung on wires between the buildings: large spherical balls of pink, yellow and orange flowers, and wire-frame butterflies and flowers in green, pink and yellow. The sky above is overcast grey with an orange construction crane visible in the distance. Purple banners on the buildings read "SPECSAVERS", "THERAPIE", "SKECHERS" and "OPERA LANE", with shopfront signs for "NEW LOOK" and "Hegarty". Shoppers walk along the paved street below and a woman in the foreground holds up a phone to take a picture.

Day 228

View down a narrow alleyway bordered by a heavily textured dry-stone wall behind which a towering industrial building with vertical metal cladding rises. There are weeds in greens and dry browns growing out of the stone wall. At the end of the alleyway, terraced houses can be seen just over another dry-stone wall. In the distance, a large hill rises into a moody, colourless, overcast sky.
