A wide, empty beach stretches into the distance beneath a sky filled with heavy, dark clouds. The sand is smooth with scattered small stones and patches of seaweed, and a line of sand dunes runs along the left side, covered in sparse vegetation. The shoreline curves gently towards the horizon, where the calm sea meets the sky in muted blue and grey tones. This library is so beautiful and unique. It was designed by Gunnar Birkerts and is known as the "Castle of Light" or the "Glass Mountain". It was inspired by Latvian folklore and literature. In traditional local legends, a sunken castle of light rises from the depths once the nation breaks free from foreign oppression and regains its freedom. It was originally designed in 1989 as Latvia was breaking away from the USSR.

When it opened thousands of people formed a human chain from the old library and passed the books hand to hand to relocate them to their new home in this building.

There were also millions of books that were in storage in different buildings around the city and now they're all able to be in one beautiful place.

I just really love libraries.

A monochrome view of the National Library of Latvia across the Daugava River. The building has an asymmetric, sloped facade which is lined with row upon row of rectangular windows that lead up to a peak with a three spoked crown on top. Bare winter trees line the water in front of the building under a moody, overcast sky.

I fear this one is too widescreen for all your little mobile screens but maybe someone out there is enjoying their photography on a nice big monitor?

I was initially a bit disappointed on this photo walk because I thought I couldn’t find anything to shoot. Then I noticed this amazing, angry looking sky, like something from an old oil painting. With a mobile phone mast to bring it into the 21st century!

A gravel track leading away from the viewer and slightly uphill. To the left there is a simple farm fence. On the brow of the hill is a mobile phone mast secured with steel cables running at a diagonal to the mast. The sky is dark and dense with full, angry-looking clouds, as if a storm is brewing.
